Area roundup: Brenna Bruil, Nicole Leonard power Pirates to volleyball win

Brenna Bruil had 10 kills and Nicole Leonard added nine kills, three aces and 10 digs to power the Whitworth Pirates to a hard-fought 25-23, 25-23, 26-24 sweep of the Lewis-Clark State Warriors in nonconference volleyball action on Wednesday at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Maddye Dinsmore chipped in with 34 assists, 12 digs and three aces for the Pirates (3-2).

Treneisha Doyle, JaLisa Jose and Kennadie Clute each had 10 kills for the Warriors (6-6), who were ranked 23rd in the NAIA preseason poll.

• Scottsdale (Arizona) Community College rolled to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 sweep over the visiting Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (4-8).

Prep soccer

Lake City staked Lewiston to a 1-0 lead on an own goal in the 7th minute, but the Timberwolves rallied to stop the Bengals 3-1 in Inland Empire League 5A play in Coeur d’Alene.

Jack Barrett scored back-to-back goals to give LC the lead and Devon Hoffman put the finishing touches on the victory with a goal in the 58th minute.

Golf

The Gonzaga Bulldogs women’s golf team was picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference by conference coaches.

It’s the fourth straight time GU has been picked as runner-up. Pepperdine was the top pick.

Bulldogs junior Ciera Min was named to the Preseason All-WCC team.

• Gonzaga Bulldogs senior Sean Walsh was named to the men’s Preseason All-WCC team for the second straight year.

As a team GU was picked to finish sixth by the conference coaches. Saint Mary’s was picked to finish first, followed by Pepperdine.

Junior hockey

The Western Hockey League announced that Spokane Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik has been suspended for three games for a kneeing major penalty and game misconduct against the Seattle Thunderbirds last Sunday in Everett.

Elynuik is eligible to return for the Chiefs’ final preseason game Sept. 19 against the Tri-City Americans at the Spokane Arena.

Rugby

Youths interested in trying out a new sport can sign up to play a version of rugby being offered Saturday by the Spokane Youth Association.

The sport “Quick Rip” rugby is a non-contact, flag version of rugby. It’s being offered for girls and boys in grades 9-12. The first eight-week session is free.

However, anyone interested in competing must register before Saturday at http://www.sysa.com/rookierugby The matches will be played at Andrew Rypien Field, 3501 N. Regal St., from 4-6 p.m.
