Obituary: Coffman, Betty Lou (Miller)
Age 91
She was born December 13, 1923 in Spokane, WA.
She graduated with honors from John Rogers High School and later completed two years of Pre-Med at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
Betty enlisted in the Navy WAVES at 18 years of age.
While serving as a Yeoman 1st Class at the Naval Supply Depot in Oakland, CA, she married Howard A. Coffman, a Chief Pharmacist’s Mate.
Their marriage ended in divorce five years later.
Betty came to Tacoma to Apprentice as a Mortician at Buckley-King Company.
She completed her apprenticeship, L.A.
Schooling, and State Board Exams and returned to Buckley-King as a Journeyman where she remained until the Mortician’s strike of 1954.
She chose not to picket and was hired that year by Weyerhaeuser where she remained for 31 years.
She retired as Administrative Assistant and Security Coordinator in 1985.
During her years at Buckley-King and Weyerhaeuser, Betty also served as Chief Yeoman for the Naval Reserve Officer’s School at 11th and Alexander in Tacoma.
She retired as a Naval Reservist after 33 years of service.
As President of the Board and Acting Manager for Casa Buena Association, she was performing these voluntary duties as well and had been doing them since she arrived at her condo complex in 1979.
She is survived by nephew Paul N. Miller of Spokane, WA and best friend Barbara Leitzinger of Tacoma, WA.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 2215 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 98403, 253-272-1414.
