Man shot by police in stable condition

The man shot by Spokane police officers Saturday at a gas station in North Spokane was in stable condition as of Monday morning, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Mark Gregory said.

Two officers shot the man Saturday afternoon at a Cenex station on Division Street. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.

Witnesses said the man was armed with a knife and trying to stop cars driving south on Division Street. He fled to the Cenex station when police arrived on scene and was trying to force his way into a parked car when officers shot him, according to witness Philip Rush.

“We had several reports that he was armed with a knife and a knife was recovered at the scene,” Gregory said.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition Saturday.

Gregory said the man’s name and more details about the incident will be released Tuesday. The Spokane Police Department will release the names of the officers involved in the shooting later this week, he said.

At least one officer who responded was wearing a body camera, Gregory said, but he wasn’t yet sure whether that officer was involved in the shooting.
