Obituary: Bemis, Mary Miles (Moffatt)

BEMIS, Mary Miles (Moffatt) 1923 - 2014 Mary Bemis, 91, passed away from complications of a stroke on November 28, 2014, surrounded by her family.

She resided at Broadway Court Estates in Spokane Valley for six years.

Born March 31, 1923, in Shelby, Montana, Mary moved with her eight siblings to Spokane, Washington, in 1932.

She was a graduate of John Rogers High School in 1941, where she met her husband, Clyde Bemis, and later married in 1946.

They celebrated 60 wonderful years before Clyde passed away April 22, 2006.

Sports came naturally to Mary.

She loved tennis, ice skating, bowling and pickleball.

Told early on by her seven brothers that skiing was not for her, she proved them wrong and became the champion woman skier of the Spokane Ski Club.

Mary continued to enjoy skiing with her four children and later her grandchildren until she turned 80.

For many years she was an active member of the Selkirk Ski Club.

Mary also loved to run and never missed a chance to run Bloomsday; was awarded a second place medal in her age group in 1995, and completed her final race in 2007 at the age of 84 (2hrs, 28min time).

But sports painted only part of the picture of Mary’s life.

She loved to bake for her family and others, and no one could compete with her homemade pies, cinnamon rolls and oatmeal bread.

You knew you were loved when at the home of Mary Bemis, and certainly never left hungry.

She also delivered Meals On Wheels until age 80.

Mary is survived by her three sons, Greg (Roberta), Randy (Cindy), and Jeff (Sue), and her daughter Diane (Joe), as well as eight grand- children and two great-grandchildren.

Mary’s life overflowed with love for her family and friends and words cannot express how much she will be missed.

Donations may be made in her name to Spokane Valley Meals On Wheels, PO Box 14278, Spokane Valley, WA 99214.

Her sweet smile and loving ways will live long in the hearts of all those she touched.
