In brief: David Lingmerth leads Colonial by one shot
GOLF: David Lingmerth had a 7-under-par 65 on Friday at the Memorial at Dublin, Ohio, and has a one-shot lead going into a weekend that includes Tiger Woods.
But just barely.
It was the second straight tournament that Woods had to make a putt on his final hole to make the cut. He was 11 shots behind Lingmerth, who was at 12-under 132.
• Pettersen, Uribe lead in Manulife LPGA Classic: Suzann Pettersen shot a 7-under 65 for a share of the second-round lead with Mariajo Uribe in the Manulife LPGA Classic at Cambridge, Ontario.
Pettersen had seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch at Whistle Bear Golf Club.
Uribe, from Colombia, had five birdies in a 66 to match Pettersen at 13-under 131.
• Andrade, Coceres share Champions Tour lead: Bill Andrade and Argentina’s Jose Coceres share the first-round lead at 6-under 66 in the Champions Tour’s Principal Charity Classic at Des Moines, Iowa.
Andrade had seven birdies and a three-putt bogey on No. 14 at Wakonda Club.
Coceres had six birdies – four on the final seven holes – in his bogey-free round.
FOOTBALL: Right tackle Anthony Davis announced his retirement from the San Francisco 49ers in another shocking loss for the team this offseason. It was unclear whether the decision stemmed from his difficulties with a concussion last year.
The 25-year-old Davis informed the team through his usual way of communicating: He sent a text message to coach Jim Tomsula before his old teammates practiced.
• ‘Kickalicious’ releases 2nd video; seeks NFL gig: “Kickalicious” is back, with another trick-shot video and an unwavering pursuit of a job with an NFL team.
Havard Rugland has released another YouTube video showing him making kicks all over Norway.
Rugland’s first video, released in 2012, earned him notice and helped get him signed by the Detroit Lions in 2013. He was released late in training camp that year.
• Miller back on the field for 49ers: Fullback Bruce Miller was back on the field for the 49ers as they wrapped up organized team activities.
Miller pleaded no contest Tuesday to a misdemeanor disturbing the peace charge stemming from an argument with his former fiancee that led to his arrest March 5. Santa Clara County prosecutors said that Miller smashed the woman’s cellphone.
• First full-time female NFL official gets assignment: Sarah Thomas is among 10 new officials joining the NFL’s crews this season. NFL officiating director Dean Blandino said that Thomas will work as a line judge with veteran referee Pete Morelli.
Thomas already had been announced as the first woman hired by the league as a full-time, on-field official.
• Dolphins’ first-round pick Parker has foot surgery: Miami Dolphins first-round draft pick DeVante Parker underwent foot surgery and will miss the rest of the team’s offseason workouts, but the receiver is expected to be ready for the beginning of the regular season.
U.S. loses to Ukraine at U-20 World Cup
SOCCER: Already assured a berth in the second round, the United States completed the group stage of the Under-20 World Cup with a 3-0 loss to Ukraine in Auckland, New Zealand.
The U.S. (2-1) finished second to Ukraine (2-0-1) in Group A and will play its round-of-16 game on Wednesday in Wellington against the second-place team from Group C: Portugal, Colombia or Senegal.
Cocked and Loaded wins Tremont Stakes
HORSE RACING: Cocked and Loaded rallied to beat Paynes Prairie by a half-length in the 118th running of the $250,000 Tremont Stakes for 2-year-olds at Belmont Park in New York.
In the other stakes:
• Waltzing Matilda pulled a 22-1 upset in the $300,000 New York, the richest of the five stakes on the program.
• Innovation Economy won the longest race of the day, beating Unitarian by a half-length in the two-mile Belmont Gold Cup Invitational on the turf.
• Rock Fall extended his winning streak to five with a dominant win in the $250,000 True North.
• Cavorting rallied to beat Enchanting Lady by three-quarters of a length in the $150,000 Jersey Girl Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
