10-year-old crowned Pokemon champion may earn invite to world championships

Norvin Bisson is 10 years old and a fourth-grader at Cooper Elementary School. He was also crowned a Pokemon City Champion earlier this month, earning him a trophy and a potential invitation to the 2015 Pokemon World Championships in Boston this summer.

He has collected 240 points in various tournaments, and his mom, Michelle Bisson, said she believes he only needs 200 to qualify for the world championships.

“I’m pretty sure I can do it,” Norvin Bisson said.

He started playing Pokemon cards when he was 5.

“There were some kids in my daycare that had the cards,” Norvin said, “and I just got interested.”

He’s participated in tournaments for about eight months.

Michelle Bisson said there aren’t that many players his age.

“I’d say most of the players are between 20 and 30,” Michelle Bisson said. “I’m 37 and I occasionally play.”

To keep developing his skills, Norvin participates in a local league on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

He’s looking forward to the release parties coming up.

“They are like a championship, but it’s more fun,” Norvin said.
