CdA’s Dale Poffenroth hits 600 victories

Dale Poffenroth came into the season needing 10 victories to reach 600 in his coaching career.

At times this year, reaching 600 didn’t seem likely, but the Coeur d’Alene girls basketball coach reached the milestone Tuesday with two games left in the regular season. His Vikings defeated Sandpoint 33-26 in a nonleague game at Sandpoint.

The win upped his career record to 600-150. In 11 years at CdA, the Viks are 226-47.

He spent 17 seasons (1987 to 2004) at Central Valley where his teams were 374-103.

“It’s like (Duke coach Mike) Krzyzewski said, it took a lot of different kids to make it happen,” Poffenroth said.

The Bears captured back-to-back State 4A championships under Poffenroth. He coached CV to one other state title and two runner-up finishes.

The Viks (10-9) earned their fourth state title under Poffenroth last year. But he graduated all five starters and essentially had to start over this season.
