Pac-12 basketball: No. 7 Arizona avenges loss in Berkeley, crushing Cal

Associated Press

Stanley Johnson had 19 points and nine rebounds, Dusan Ristic scored 12 points and No. 7 Arizona avenged last season’s loss in Berkeley by crushing California 73-50 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats overcame early foul trouble to their frontcourt to finish the first half ahead by 10. They came out of the break with another big burst, going ahead by 24 points and cruising to their fourth consecutive win.

It was a small slice of redemption for Arizona after Cal upset the top-ranked and undefeated Wildcats 60-58 on Justin Cobbs’ last-second shot a season ago at Haas Pavilion.

The Golden Bears are far from that team now. They’ve lost six straight and eight of nine games, falling into last place in the conference.

Oregon 82, UCLA 64: Joseph Young led five Oregon scorers in double figures with 16 points as the Ducks rode 75 percent shooting from the field in the first half to a victory over the Bruins in Eugene.

Dwayne Benjamin added 15 points off the bench, Elgin Cook had 11, and Jalil Abdul-Bassit and Ahmaad Rorie scored 10 each for Oregon, which leads the conference in 3-point attempts but tried just 13 and made nine in the rout.

Stanford 89, Arizona State 70: Chasson Randle, Anthony Brown and Stefan Nastic each recorded at least 20 points and the host Cardinal ran away from the Sun Devils.

Randle and Brown contributed 21 points apiece and Nastic added 20 as the Cardinal won their eighth in 10 games. Rosco Allen had 12 points for Stanford.

Oregon State 59, USC 55: Gary Payton II recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Beavers to victory over the Trojans in Corvallis, Oregon.

Jarmal Reid added 14 points, including the go-ahead basket with 10:02 to play, as the Beavers won their third in a row and improved to 12-0 at Gill Coliseum.

Trailing 58-55, the Trojans had the ball with a chance to tie, but Payton intercepted a Julian Jacobs’ pass that was intended for Nikola Jovanovic at the top of the 3-point arc with eight seconds to play.

Katin Reinhardt led USC with 17 points.
