In brief: Russell Westbrook records triple-double, paces Thunder past Warriors
NBA: Russell Westbrook scored 17 points, had a career high 17 assists and matched a career best with 15 rebounds to help the host Thunder beat Golden State 127-115 in Oklahoma City.
Kevin Durant scored 36 points, Serge Ibaka matched his career-high with 27 points and Dion Waiters added 21 for the Thunder.
The Warriors entered the game with the league’s best record, and the loss snapped their eight-game winning streak. Former Washington State standout Klay Thompson scored 32 points, Marreese Speights had 20 and Stephen Curry added 19 for the Warriors, who allowed their highest point total of the season.
• Spurs handle Blazers: Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points in his return from a 15-game absence and San Antonio rolled to a 110-96 victory over visiting Portland.
After missing 17 games total due to a torn ligament in his right hand, Leonard’s presence energized San Antonio. The Spurs had the extra step and pep they needed to run the fluid ball movement that became a staple of their march to last season’s NBA title.
Tony Parker scored 19 points and Patty Mills added 18 for San Antonio, which had six players score in double figures and had 34 assists. Tim Duncan had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
• Hawks win again: Al Horford scored 22 points, Paul Millsap had 16 and visiting Atlanta extended its winning streak to 11 games, beating the Toronto Raptors 110-89.
Jeff Teague and DeMarre Carroll each scored 13 points and Kyle Korver had 11 for the Hawks. Atlanta, which made 12 of 23 3-point attempts, is unbeaten since a 107-77 blowout loss to Milwaukee on Dec. 26.
• Cavs outlast Clippers: Kyrie Irving scored 37 points, LeBron James added 32 and Cleveland held off host Los Angeles 126-121.
Tristan Thompson had a season-high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds starting in place of Kevin Love, who sat out after hurting his back in Thursday’s win over the Lakers.
Blake Griffin had 34 points and 19 rebounds to lead six Clippers in double figures.
• Sanders suspended: Larry Sanders of the Milwaukee Bucks was suspended without pay for a minimum of 10 games for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program.
It is the second suspension for violating the league’s anti-drug program in less than a year. Sanders missed the final five games of the 2013-14 season; the center said he was penalized for using marijuana.
Okposo carries Islanders to win
NHL: Kyle Okposo scored three of his four goals in the third period to complete his first NHL hat trick, and the New York Islanders jumped back into first place in the Eastern Conference with a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Uniondale, New York.
Ryan Strome and Michael Grabner also scored, and Islanders captain John Tavares had three assists – including his 200th in the NHL.
• Predators top Capitals: James Neal scored twice and the surging Predators spoiled coach Barry Trotz’s return to Nashville, Tennessee, beating Washington 4-3 for their fifth straight victory.
Seth Jones and Mattias Ekholm had the other goals for the Predators, who fired Trotz at the end of last season.
• Marchand suspended: Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL for slew-footing Rangers forward Derick Brassard. Marchand wasn’t penalized for the infraction during Boston’s 3-0 victory Thursday. The suspension will cost him $48,387.
Sunderland sends Altidore to Toronto
Soccer: Toronto has acquired Jozy Altidore from Sunderland of England’s Premier League and signed the American forward to a contract as a designated player under Major League Soccer’s rules.
Toronto also said it has agreed to transfer forward Jermaine Defoe to the Black Cats, just one year after obtaining him from Tottenham.
The 25-year-old Altidore played for the New York Red Bulls from 2006-08 and was sold to Spain’s Villarreal for a transfer fee of about $10 million.
• Brian top pick: The Houston Dash selected Virginia and U.S. national team midfielder Morgan Brian with the first overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League college draft.
The Chicago Red Stars selected Boston College midfielder Stephanie McCaffrey fifth overall and later took Washington State midfielder Nicole Setterlund in the third round. Setterlund is the first WSU player to be drafted into the NSWL.
Mariota adds Manning award to accolades
College Football: Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota was honored with the Manning Award for the nation’s top college quarterback. The winner is determined by a vote from a panel of local and national media, as well as Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
• Whittingham extended: Utah head football coach Kyle Whittingham has agreed to the terms of a new four-year deal that could keep him with the program through 2018.
The school says Whittingham will earn $2.6 million in 2015 with an automatic $100,000 raise each year through 2018.
McLaughlin leaving UW volleyball
Miscellany: Jim McLaughlin, the coach who built the University of Washington volleyball program into a national power, is leaving to become the head coach at Notre Dame.
A report by the Seattle Times was confirmed by McLaughlin and UW athletic director Scott Woodward.
In 14 seasons at Washington, McLaughlin’s teams had 10 finishes in the Top 10, reached four Final Fours and won the national championship in 2005.
• Simpson, Kuchar knotted up : Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar made enough birdies on the back nine to build a little separation and share the lead in the Sony Open in Honolulu.
Kuchar played bogey-free in a round of 7-under 63. Simpson reached the par-5 18th green in two for a two-putt birdie with his conventional putter. That gave him a 66 and a share of the lead at 12-under 128.
Ferris grad Alex Prugh shot a 70 and missed the cut.
• Kostner faces ban: Former figure skating world champion Carolina Kostner has been banned for 16 months for her role in the doping case involving her ex-boyfriend and Olympic race-walking gold medalist Alex Schwazer.
The Italian Olympic Committee’s anti-doping prosecutor had originally recommended that Kostner be banned for four years and three months for helping Schwazer evade a test and other infractions.
• CBS broadcaster Anthony arrested: District of Columbia police say CBS basketball analyst and former NBA player Greg Anthony has been arrested and charged with soliciting a prostitute. The 47-year-old Anthony was released Friday evening.
