Area roundup: University, Tate Orndorff win Gut Check Challenge
University, led by heavyweight Tate Orndorff, claimed the team title Saturday at the Gut Check Challenge in Olympia.
Orndorff was the Titans’ lone individual champion after defeating Forks’ Miguel Morales at 285 pounds.
Cam Sorensen also made a final for University, but fell to Lakes’ Andrew Ramirez at 132 pounds.
Henley was second, followed by Hermiston, Yelm and Port Angeles. Colville took eighth, East Valley was ninth and Lewis and Clark tied for 20th.
Other local weight-class champions included Colville’s T.J. Baun (113 pounds) and East Valley’s Trey Meyer (152).
• Post Falls defeated Pasco 66-12 in the gold bracket at the River City Duals in Post Falls. Shadle Park took second place in the silver bracket and Priest River was the bronze bracket champion.
Junior hockey
Rayce Miller scored two power-play goals and the Nelson Leafs (22-10-2-1-4) defeated the Spokane Braves (20-17-0-0-4) 5-1 in a KIJHL game in Nelson, British Columbia.
Sean Collins scored Spokane’s lone goal with 2:07 left in the first period.
