Photo: Slide temporarily closes Highway 97

Clearing debris: Hundreds of tons of rock and mud crumbled from a mountainside onto a state highway southeast of Coeur d’Alene on Thursday morning, blocking the road for hours. The slide was on state Highway 97 on Beauty Bay, a part of Lake Coeur d’Alene near Wolf Lodge that’s popular with eagle watchers this time of year. No vehicles were struck and no injuries reported in the slide, which happened about 9:45 a.m. south of the Mineral Ridge boat launch. The Idaho Department of Transportation estimated 250 to 300 cubic yards, or nearly 450 tons, of debris fell across both lanes of the highway. One lane had been cleared for traffic by 2 p.m. and the other was expected to be cleared about 5 p.m., the state said. (Kathy Plonka)
