In brief: LaMarcus Aldridge leads Trail Blazers past Heat

NBA LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers used a big third quarter to beat the Miami Heat 99-83 Thursday night in Portland, Oregon.

Aldridge scored 10 points in the third, when the Blazers outscored the Heat 33-16 to take control of the game.

Wesley Matthews had 18 points, Damian Lillard 16 and Chris Kaman 10 for Portland. The Blazers grabbed 28 rebounds in the second half and outrebounded Miami 50-42 overall.

Dwyane Wade led Miami with 23 points. Chris Bosh had 18 and Hassan Whiteside 10 for the Heat.

Hawks owners approve plan to sell team: In a three-sentence statement, the Atlanta Hawks’ owners announced they have unanimously approved a plan to sell all shares of the team. The sale is to include operating rights to Philips Arena, the Hawks’ home facility.

Nets’ Williams out at least a week with rib fracture: Deron Williams has been diagnosed with a fracture of his left rib and the Brooklyn Nets guard will miss at least a week.

Williams was hurt Sunday in a loss at Miami, missed a game Monday, then tried to return Wednesday but lasted just 4 minutes before having to come out of an 89-81 loss to Boston.

Blazers sign GM Neil Olshey to contract extension: The Portland Trail Blazers have signed general manager Neil Olshey to a multiyear contract extension.

Team owner Paul Allen praised Olshey for rebuilding the team to a playoff contender. The Blazers advanced out of the first round of the playoffs last season before eventually falling to the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals.

Bickell scores 2, Blackhawks top Wild

NHL Bryan Bickell scored twice in the third period, Corey Crawford made a season-high 42 saves and the Chicago Blackhawks held on to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane also scored for Chicago, which has won four of six. The Blackhawks entered the night two points behind Nashville atop the Central Division.

Jason Zucker and Jason Pominville scored for Minnesota, which has lost nine of 11.

Lucic nets 2, Bruins top Devils: Milan Lucic scored two goals, and Niklas Svedberg earned his second NHL shutout behind three periods of stifling Boston defense as the Bruins beat the visiting New Jersey Devils 3-0.

Svedberg faced only 14 shots. Boston held New Jersey to three in the opening period and four in the second, three coming on a late power play that did nothing to spark the Devils.

Old Dominion debuts ranking with a win

Men’s basketball Jonathan Arledge scored 13 points to lead No. 25 Old Dominion to a 72-51 win over Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia, in the Monarchs’ debut as a ranked team.

Old Dominion (13-1, 2-0 Conference USA) won its 10th straight game to continue its best start since moving to Division I in the 1976-77 season.

Trey Freeman and Jordan Baker added 11 points apiece for the Monarchs.

Austin Loop scored 15 points and Jay Johnson and Ryan Taylor had 13 apiece for Marshall (4-11, 0-2).

Three Rivers’ Gene Bess reaches 1,200 wins: Gene Bess became the first college basketball coach to reach 1,200 victories, directing Three Rivers Community College to a 91-51 victory over State Fair.

The 79-year-old Bess is 1,200-349 in 45 seasons as coach at the Poplar Bluff, Missouri, school.

Miami ends No. 4 ND’s road win streak

Women’s basketball Adrienne Motley scored a career-high 32 points, and Miami snapped No. 4 Notre Dame’s record-tying 30-game road winning streak, beating the Fighting Irish 78-63 in Coral Gables, Florida.

Jassany Williams blocked a school-record nine shots for the Hurricanes (12-3, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who stormed out to a 40-20 lead at halftime, wasted most of that cushion and then held on for their 10th win in 11 games.

Jewell Loyd scored 27 points for Notre Dame (14-2, 2-1), which got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Brianna Turner. Notre Dame’s last road loss was March 6, 2012, at Connecticut, which set the Division I women’s record with 30 straight road wins from 2008-10.

It was also Notre Dame’s first loss in 22 ACC games.

Kiesel leads Pittsburgh to win over No. 8 UNC: Brianna Kiesel had 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead Pittsburgh past visiting No. 8 North Carolina.

Monica Wignot added 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Stasha Carey scored 17 for the Panthers (11-4, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) as they beat a ranked opponent for the first time in nearly four years.

Allisha Gray led North Carolina (14-2, 1-1) with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Stephanie Mavunga, the reigning conference player of the week, scored 12.

Greenwell, No. 13 Duke hold off No. 21 Syracuse: Rebecca Greenwell scored 20 points, including the game-winning free throws with 26.5 seconds left, as No. 13 Duke escaped with a 74-72 win over No. 21 Syracuse in Durham, North Carolina.

Greenwell set up her clutch free throws when she rebounded her own missed shot underneath and was fouled, and the Blue Devils (11-4, 2-0 ACC) survived two close-in shots by the Orange (10-5, 0-2) in the final 5 seconds. Diamond Henderson had a shot from about eight feet on the left baseline and Cornelia Fonderon couldn’t get the putback to fall.

Lampard under contract at Man City

Miscellany The English Premier League says Frank Lampard is under contract at Manchester City not New York City FC.

The New York team, which debuts in MLS in March, announced in July that Lampard signed a two-year contract. Shortly afterward, Man City said Lampard was returning to the Premier League on loan.

Former Dolphins player swims 9 miles: Former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad swam nine miles back to shore after falling off his boat while fishing off the South Florida coast.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that Konrad had gone fishing alone Wednesday after being dropped off at a Boca Raton dock. Friends became concerned after he didn’t meet them for dinner, and the Coast Guard later sent a helicopter to look for him.

The Coast Guard said Konrad apparently fell off the 36-foot boat, which had been on auto pilot. Unable to get back to the boat, Konrad began swimming toward shore. He made it sometime after 4 a.m.
