Axtell scores 30 in Riverside win

Tyler Axtell scored 30 points and Riverside surged in the fourth quarter and beat Lakeside 63-56 Tuesday in Nine Mile Falls in a battle of elite Northeast A League teams.

Jesse Anselm added 20 points for the Rams (9-1, 4-0), who outscored the Eagles 27-21 in the final quarter.

Riverside made 16 of 19 free throws and 11 of 25 3-pointers.

Cameron Gay scored 23 points and Dominque Watson had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeside (8-2, 3-1).

The Rams are now tied with Medical Lake atop the NEA standings. Riverside hosts Medical Lake on Jan. 16.

Medical Lake 61, Colville 50: Tellas Johnson and Jaelon Stith each had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Cory Wagner added 14, including eight in a decisive 14-0 third-quarter run, and the Cardinals (6-2, 4-0) beat the visiting Indians (1-8, 1-3). Colville’s Dallas Martin led all scorers with 17 points.

Deer Park 61, Chewelah 35: Nate Guske scored 25 points and the Stags (4-6, 2-2) thoroughly dominated in the first half before letting up late in a win over the host Cougars (1-9, 0-4). Deer Park outscored Chewelah 15-2 to open the game and led by 25 at halftime. The Cougars’ Connor Gotham tallied a team-high 11 points.

Freeman 63, Newport 53: Ryan Maine had 20 points and seven rebounds and the Scotties (3-6, 1-3) survived the Grizzlies’ late charge in a win in Freeman. Newport (6-4, 1-3) cut Freeman’s 18-point lead to three in the fourth, but couldn’t complete the comeback. The Scotties’ Jake Phipps added 16 points and Jack Paukert 12. Koa Pancho led Newport with 16 points.

Great Northern

East Valley 51, Cheney 41: Tanner Jacobs scored seven of his game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Knights (4-6, 1-1) surged late and beat the visiting Blackhawks (4-6, 0-3). Down by a point entering the final quarter, East Valley outscored Cheney 22-11 to secure the victory. EV’s Dante Clayton added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Northeast 1B North

Curlew 62, Republic 50: The Cougars (10-1, 5-1) pulled away with a 23-12 fourth-quarter run and beat the visiting Tigers (4-4, 2-4) in a back-and-forth game. Coby Grumbach led Curlew with 17 points and Taylor Campbell tallied a game-high 19 points for Republic.

Nonleague

Colfax 56, Davenport 55 (2OT): Mark Webber and Keith Gfeller scored 16 points apiece and the Bulldogs (10-2) escaped with a double-overtime win over the host Gorillas (3-8). Davenport’s turnover with 1.3 seconds left sealed the win for Colfax. The Gorillas’ Nathan Hopkins scored 13 points and hit a 3-pointer at the first-overtime buzzer to extend the game. Davenport’s Austin Zeller led all scorers with 19 points.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 57, Northwest Christian 52: Jacob Saetre and Cort Ruzicka combined for 29 points and the Broncos (7-3) erased an eight-point halftime deficit and beat the host Crusaders (8-4). NWC had three players score in double figures: David Olds (21), Nathan Sander (13) and Asher Cox (10).

Reardan 65, Columbia 27: Wyatt Thurman hit five 3s and scored a game-high 22 points as the Indians (6-5) routed the visiting Lions (0-9). Thurman scored 12 points in Reardan’s 27-10 opening quarter. Columbia’s Caleb Reynolds tallied a team-high 10 points.

Liberty 78, Springdale 30: Clay Fleming scored 22 points and Kyle King added 20 as the Lancers (11-1) routed the host Chargers (5-6). Liberty turned the ball over just seven times while forcing 20 Springdale turnovers. The Chargers’ Chandler Carr tallied a team-high 12 points.

Wilbur-Creston 51, Tekoa-Rosalia 44: Nick Densley hit four 3s as part of his game-high 16 points and the Wildcats (10-1) topped the Timberwolves (0-11) in Creston. Colton Magers and Trystan Rosman added a combined 24 points for Wilbur-Creston, which had 17 assists as a team. Tekoa-Rosalia’s Cooper Jacobs tallied a team-high 13 points.

St. George’s 71, Kettle Falls 19: Felix Tsai scored 17 points and Cody Peplinski added 16 as the Dragons (7-5) dumped the host Bulldogs (0-10). St. George’s set the tone with a 20-3 first-quarter run.

Cusick 64, Valley Christian 47: Alec Bluff had 20 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and six steals as Cusick (6-3) dominated early and coasted past host Valley Christian (1-7). Cameron Bauer hit three 3-pointers and added 16 points and Franklin Pope pulled down 10 rebounds for Cusick. Valley Christian’s James Segalla tallied a team-high 19 points.

Asotin 69, Oakesdale 44: Kolby Blunt scored 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting and Jake Gosse scored 14 as the Panthers routed the host Nighthawks (3-6). Zach Dabolt and Parker Perry scored 13 points apiece for Oakesdale.
