Cheney High cyber squads advance

The Cheney High School Cyber Patriots teams competed in the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition on Dec. 6. Team Bravo placed first of 15 teams in the Washington Gold division and fifth in the nation. The team will compete for the Western Regional championship on Jan. 18. Team Bravo is Joe Riddle, Kendra Kendall, Matt Dupler, Bradley Travis, Marianne Pollard and Kyle Sewright.

Team Alpha placed second in the state and will also be competing in the regional championship. Team Alpha is Noah Brown, Colton Dotson, Jake McGillicuddy, Andrew Jenkins, Blake Meldrum and Ian Case.

During the National Cyber Defense Competition, middle and high school students manage the network of a small company. Teams are given a set of virtual images that represent operating systems and must find cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the image and strengthen the system while maintaining critical services in six hours.

Recycle trees at Ferris

Ferris High School will hold a “Treecycling” event on Saturday and Sunday and Jan. 10 and 11 to raise money for its senior all-nighter, a drug- and alcohol-free graduation party.

Trees can be dropped off at the school’s parking lot at 37th Avenue and Regal Street, or contact Jay Oien at (509) 230-6886 to schedule a local pickup.

There is a $5 minimum drop off fee and a $10 fee for local pickups.
