WSU escapes bases-loaded jam in 9th to hold off Huskies 3-0 in Pac-12 baseball

Washington State escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 3-0 Pac-12 baseball victory over Washington on Monday night at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Cougars relief pitcher Ian Hamilton struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth around loading the bases, getting the Huskies’ Joey Morgan swinging to end the game for his 10th save.

Lane Bruner (2-0), the second of four WSU (24-19, 7-11 Pac-12) pitchers who blanked the Huskies (23-19, 8-13) on three hits, earned the win.

Shane Matheny and PJ Jones contributed run-scoring singles and scored runs for the Cougars.

Jones, who scored what proved the winning run in the third inning on Jack Strunc’s infield out, drove in Matheny with in a two-run seventh. Matheny had singled home Ian Sagdal with the first run of the inning.

Men’s golf

Aaron Cockerill, bouyed by four birdies and an eagle-3 on par-5 holes, shot a par 72 to share first-round medalist honors and lead Idaho to a 2-stroke lead in the Big Sky Conference Championships at Greenhorn Creek Resort in Angels Camp, California.

Cockerill, who shares the lead with Riley Hayfield of Sacramento State, got support from teammates Jared du Toit and Daniel Sutton, who shot 73s to sit a stroke back of the leaders.

UI’s 7-over 295 is two strokes up on Sacramento State.

• Tanner Kovacevich shot a 1-under 143 at Apple Tree Golf Club in Yakima to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to its third win in four NWC tournaments this spring with a 10-over 586, 24 strokes better than Olympic.

John Duffin (Coeur d’Alene High) of CCS placed third at 2-over 146 while North Idaho’s Michael Porter (CdA High) and Hugh Taylor tied for fourth at 147.

The Cardinals were seventh as a team at 621.

Women’s golf

Community Colleges of Spokane was third and North Idaho was sixth in the third NWAC tournament at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.

CCS, led by Hailey Warren (Mt. Spokane), who was seventh at 174, had a 543 behind Bellevue’s winning 489 team score.

NIC was at 610, led by Elsa Goodsen (Coeur d’Alene High), who shot 185 for 13th.

Three players tied for medalist honors at 158.

• Gonzaga and Washington have been selected to the 16-team West Regional of the 2015 NCAA Championships May 7-9 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.

Washington received an at-large bid and is seeded second behind UCLA. Gonzaga, which earned its third straight postseason berth, is seeded 13th.

Tennis

Four Whitworth players have been selected to All-Northwest Conference teams.

Drew Brigham, a junior, was named to the men’s All-NWC first team and senior Saryn Mooney, sophomore Bella Hoyos and junior Taylor Pena were named to the women’s second team.

Track and field

Jordan Arakawa, an Eastern Washington senior, was selected the Big Sky Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.

Arakawa won the hammer throw at the Cougar Invitational at 215 feet, 2 inches, seventh best in the west and 19th nationally.

Men’s basketball

Austin McBroom, a 5-foot-9 guard, visited Eastern Washington during the weekend and confirmed he will transfer from Saint Louis University, Eagles coach Jim Hayford announced.

McBroom will be eligible to play for EWU next season.
