Out & About: New Mount Spokane snowshoe hut ready; open house Oct. 5

A warming hut primarily for snowshoers has been built at Mount Spokane.

OUTHOUSE – A warming cabin built over two years with snowshoers in mind has been completed at Mount Spokane State Park.

Volunteers and park staff are planning an open house next Sunday, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. to show off the handsome digs, complete with a wood stove.

The shelter was funded with help from the Johnston-Fix Foundation and work was coordinated by the Friends of Mount Spokane State Park.

Drive up Mount Spokane Park Drive 1.7 miles from the park entrance and leave vehicles at the hairpin turn parking lot, Discover Pass required.

Hike or bike 1.2 miles past the gate on the Mount Kit Carson Loop Road to Smith Gap, while dreaming about how much fun the trek will be webfooting over a blanket of fresh snow. Drinks will be served; snacks will be shared. Bring a potluck treat. Pack it in, pack it out.

Powderwhore revealing movie tricks at Mountain Gear

OUTFOCUSED – Powderwhore Productions skiing and snowboarding filmmakers Jonah and Noah Howell are coming to Spokane to show their latest flick and interact with the audience in a Q&A about making wintersports films.

They will present “Behind The Lens” at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the Mountain Gear retail store, 2002 N. Division St.

Turnbull Refuge planting party taps volunteers, boosts wildlife

OUTDO – Volunteers are organizing the annual fall planting party based out of Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters on Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon, followed by a potluck lunch at the refuge headquarters.

The effort boosts habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
