Obituary: Orchard, Douglas James

ORCHARD, Douglas James “Bugsy” (Age 68) Our generous father and husband passed into the kingdom of Heaven, September 22, 2014 after an intense three year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Douglas was born December 29, 1945 to George Orchard and Madeline Layman-Orchard and was a lifetime resident of Spokane.

Douglas married Barbara McDonald in 1965 and they recently celebrated 49 years of marriage.

Douglas graduated from Gonzaga Prep High School in 1964 and joined the Marine Corp Reserves, receiving commendations, including an expert badge in marksmanship.

After completing trade school, Douglas excelled in his occupation of Machinist at General Machinery Co., Kaiser Aluminum and the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineer.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents George Orchard and Madeline Orchard-Layman and his brothers Brian and Bruce Orchard.

He is survived by his beautiful wife Barbara McDonald Orchard, sons: Timothy Orchard, Andrew (Deborah) Orchard, and daughter Christine Bentley (Orchard).

Douglas is also survived by his brother Craig Orchard and sister Mary Ackerman, five grand- children: D.J., Brian, Mariah, Alyssa and Gabrielle, and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, co-workers and friends who loved and adored him.

Douglas “Bugsy” was dedicated to his wife, family and career and was the “go to guy”, always lending a helping hand as well as his knowledge of mechanics and carpentry.

Douglas was a skilled outdoorsman and hunter, teaching and sharing his skills with many memorable hunting trips with family and friends.

He also enjoyed golf and history.

Douglas was a gentle soul with a contagious sense of humor, always putting others first while protecting his family.

Dedicated to the Lord, Douglas was a member of St. Peter’s Parish.

His memory and passion for life will never be forgotten and we will miss him dearly.

A Rosary will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 5:00PM at St. Peter’s Parish.

A Funeral Service to celebrate his life and journey will be held at St. Peter’s Parish on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 10:30AM, with a reception following mass.

A Graveside Service with Marine Funeral Honors will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery at 1:30.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Catholic Charities or the Union Gospel Mission.
