Hedrick-Miller combo lifts Broncos

Grant Hedrick threw two touchdowns to Matt Miller and caught one from the senior receiver on a trick play as Boise State beat UConn 38-21 on Saturday afternoon in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Boise State (2-1) also got two touchdowns from its defense, which held UConn (1-2) to 48 yards rushing and sacked Huskies quarterbacks eight times.

Hedrick found Miller for a 35-yard score in the second quarter, and Miller returned the favor on a trick play a few minutes later, hitting Hedrick for a 7-yard score after getting the ball on an end-around.

A 9-yard strike from Hedrick to Miller gave BSU a 31-21 lead in the fourth quarter after UConn had pulled within three.

Boise State running back Jay Ajayi, who came in averaging 158 yards per game and nearly 6 yards per run, was held to 39 yards on 18 carries.

Penn State 13, Rutgers 10: Bill Belton scored on a 5-yard run with 1:13 to play and the Nittany Lions (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat the Scarlet Knights (2-1, 0-1) in Piscataway, New Jersey, spoiling Rutgers’ Big Ten Conference debut.

Bowling Green 45, Indiana 42: James Knapke threw a 2-yard TD pass to Roger Lewis with 9 seconds to play in the game and the Falcons (2-1) knocked off the Hoosiers (1-1) in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Duke 41, Kansas 3: Freshman Shaun Wilson rushed for a school-record 245 yards with three long TD gallops and the Blue Devils (3-0) routed the Jayhawks (1-1) in Durham, North Carolina.

Utah State 36, Wake Forest 24: The Aggies (2-1) scored defensive touchdowns – interception return, fumble return – off a pair of first-half turnovers and held the Demon Deacons (1-2) to minus-25 yards rushing in a win in Logan, Utah, that marked their first win over an ACC team.

West Virginia 40, Maryland 37: Clint Trickett passed for 511 yards and four TDs, and the Mountaineers (2-1) gave away a 22-point lead before Josh Lambert kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give them a victory over the Terrapins (2-1) in College Park, Maryland.

Florida 36, Kentucky 30 (3OT): Matt Jones’ 1-yard plunge in the third overtime carried the Gators (2-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) to a win over the Wildcats (2-1, 0-1) in Gainesville, Florida.

North Dakota State 58, Incarnate Word 0: Carson Wentz passed for 237 yards and three TDs, and John Crockett rushed for two TDs as the three-time defending FCS-champion Bison (3-0) extended their winning streak to 27 games with a shutout win over the Cardinals (0-3) in Fargo, North Dakota.
