Around the Remote: Burns’ ‘The Roosevelts’

Chuck Barney Mcclatchy-Tribune

Don’t miss

“The Roosevelts: An Intimate History”: The political dynasty that produced two substantial presidents and one extraordinary first lady gets the Ken Burns treatment, and you know what that means: lots of old-time photographs, Meryl Streep voice-overs, and enough George Will to last a lifetime. It’s all lathered over an illuminating 14-hour, seven-part film that not only explores the political imprint of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor, but gets up close and personal with its subjects in an attempt to examine what made them tick. 8 p.m. Sunday, KSPS and KCDT.

Other bets

SUNDAY: Break out the swimsuits and sashes. It’s time for the “2015 Miss America Competition,” coming to you from Atlantic City, where the pageant got its start in 1921. 9 p.m., ABC.

SUNDAY: Seth MacFarlane’s zany animated series “American Dad” launches a new season with two of its last fresh episodes on Fox. The series is set to jump to TBS in October. 9 p.m., Fox.

MONDAY: “Dancing With the Stars” returns for its – gasp! – 19th season. Among the alleged “stars” this time are Alfonso Riberio, Lea Thompson and 76-year-old stoner Tommy Chong. 8 p.m., ABC.

TUESDAY: In the Season 4 premiere of “New Girl,” Jess (Zooey Deschanel) attends a wedding with the guys and makes a bet over who will hook up with someone first. In other words, it’s a disaster in the making. 9 p.m., Fox.

TUESDAY: As “The Mindy Project” returns for a new season, fans want to know: What’s next for Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina)? Can they possibly make a relationship work? 9:30 p.m., Fox.

WEDNESDAY: The craziness comes to an end tonight on “America’s Got Talent,” as the summer reality show crowns its $1 million champion. But first, they’ll make you sit through two hours of excessive bloat. 8 p.m., NBC.

WEDNESDAY: Imagine “The Breakfast Club” with sick kids, and you’ve got the general idea behind “Red Band Society.” It’s a provocative new drama that follows a group of teens who meet and bond as patients in an L.A. hospital. Octavia Spencer heads the cast. 9 p.m., Fox.

THURSDAY: The dark and twisted sitcom “You’re the Worst” made a hilarious first impression this summer. Unfortunately, Season 1 ends tonight with the love-averse Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) supposedly taking their relationship to the next level. 10:30 p.m., FX.

FRIDAY: “The Knick” continues its fascinating Season 1 run as Thackery (Clive Owen) tests a new operating-room procedure. That could be scary, but probably not as scary as Clive’s mustache. 10 p.m., Cinemax.

SATURDAY: “Beyonce Jay Z On the Run” is a concert special that gives viewers front-row seats to the hottest tour of the summer. It was taped at Stade de France in Paris, where the royal couple of R&B and rap performed more than 40 songs. 9 p.m., HBO.
