Photo: A sure-footed staredown atop Scotchman

A goat makes for a great hike: “This mountain goat greeted my friend and me as we reached the top of Scotchman Peak. The trail is a grunt from the get-go, about 3,700 feet of elevation gain in about 3 miles. After about 2 miles the trail became a huckleberry highway. We found our first goat at the top. It stood there, some 15 feet away, looking right at us.” (John Stucke photo)
