Philadelphia soars past Dallas in OT
NHL: Claude Giroux scored a power-play goal at 2:49 of overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 6-5 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night in Dallas.
Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Andrew MacDonald, Jakub Voracek and Michael Raffl scored in regulation for the Flyers.
Giroux’s game-winner came 40 seconds after Dallas’ Trevor Daley was penalized for hooking, the Flyers’ third power-play goal in the game.
Daley scored twice, Jason Spezza had a goal and three assists, Eric Cole and Jamie Benn also scored and Tyler Seguin had four assists for the Stars. Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves while dropping to 0-11-2 in his career against the Flyers.
The Stars led 4-2 heading to the third period, before MacDonald and Voracek scored to tie it with 5:46 left in regulation. Spezza regained Dallas’ lead 40 seconds later, but Raffl tied it again with 3:53 remaining.
• Pens clip Isles: Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart in the second period, and the Pittsburgh Penguins gave the New York Islanders their first loss of the season, 3-1 in Pittsburgh.
• Sharks hold off Devils: Logan Couture had a goal and two assists and Antti Niemi made 35 saves as visiting San Jose kept up their strong start to the season with a 4-2 win over pesky New Jersey.
• Canadiens stop Avs: P.K. Subban scored twice and Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist in Montreal’s 3-2 victory over visiting Colorado.
• Toews boosts Blackhawks: Jonathan Toews scored a short-handed breakaway goal at 3:26 of overtime to give Chicago a 2-1 home victory over Nashville.
• Senators beat Blue Jackets: Mike Hoffman made up for missing a penalty shot by scoring the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period to give host Ottawa a 3-2 victory over Columbus.
• Red Wings edge Maple Leafs: Henrik Zetterberg scored with 9.9 seconds left in overtime to give Detroit a 1-0 home victory over Toronto and a sweep of the teams’ home-and-home series.
• Capitals dump Panthers: The Capitals scored on all three shots in the shootout, and Justin Peters made 20 saves in his first start this season to lift Washington over visiting Florida 2-1.
• Schwartz lifts Blues: Jaden Schwartz completed a hat trick with 3 seconds to play, goalie Jake Allen was strong in his first NHL start in two seasons and St. Louis beat host Arizona 6-1.
• Bruins blank Sabres: Niklas Svedberg made 32 saves in his first NHL shutout, and Boston beat host Buffalo 4-0.
• Lightning zap Canucks: Steven Stamkos scored two goals and added an assist and Ben Bishop made 30 saves as the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning beat Vancouver 4-2 and handed the Canucks their first loss.
Semis set for Match Play Championships
Golf: Dutchman Joost Luiten extended his unbeaten run in the World Match Play Championship, routing Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal 6 and 5 in the quarterfinals in Ash, England.
Luiten will match up against Finland’s Mikko Ilonen, a 2-up winner over France’s Victor Dubuisson.
In the other semifinal, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson will face South Africa’s George Coetzee.
Stenson beat Swedish compatriot Jonas Blixt 2-up, and Coetzee topped American Patrick Reed 2 and 1.
• Bae, Baek share lead: South Koreans Hee-Kyung Bae and Kyu Jung Baek both shot 4-under-par 68s to share the third-round lead in the LPGA KEB-HanaBank Championship in Incheon, South Korea.
Bae had five back-nine birdies on Sky72’s Ocean Course, and Baek had six birdies and two bogeys.
• Haas stays in front: Jay Haas shot a 4-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Champions Tour’s Greater Hickory Kia Classic in Conover, North Carolina.
Joe Durant, tied for the first-round lead with Haas at 63, had a 69 to drop into a tie for second with former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett and David Frost. Triplett, the winner last week in Cary, North Carolina, had a 66, and Frost shot 65.
• Martin leads Shriners: Ben Martin birdied five straight holes on the back nine and finished with a 9-under 62 to take a two-stroke lead in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.
Scotland’s Russell Knox, tied for the second-round lead with Andrew Putnam, was second after a 66.
Cilic reaches Kremlin Open final
Tennis: U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic reached the final of the Kremlin Cup, beating Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Moscow.
In today’s final, the big-serving Croatian will seek his fourth title of the season against Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.
World No. 16 Bautista Agut, seeded fifth in Moscow, will play in his third final of a breakout season after beating third-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-4.
The women’s final will pit sixth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia against Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania.
Pavlyuchenkova dominated the Czech qualifier from start to finish, winning 6-2, 6-2 to reach her 10th career final on the WTA tour.
Earlier, Begu fought to a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.
• Ferrer, Murray advance: David Ferrer came from a break down in the final set to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3) and set up a final against Andy Murray at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
Top-seeded Ferrer will appear in his fourth final of the season. He is seeking his 22nd career title and second of the year.
Earlier, second-seeded Murray defeated Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-4, 6-3 to reach his second final of the season after winning his 29th career title in Shenzhen, China, last month.
• Beck takes title: Annika Beck of Germany won her first career title, beating fourth-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1 in the Luxembourg Open final.
• Berdych, Dimitrov will meet: Top-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic will play defending champion Grigor Dimitrov in the final of the Stockholm Open.
Berdych defeated German qualifier Matthias Bachinger 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the semifinals, while Dimitrov beat Australia’s Bernard Tomic 6-3, 7-5 after the second-seeded Bulgarian fought his way back from 4-1 down in the second set.
• Singapore groups set: Serena Williams will play two of the tour’s young rising stars in the round-robin stage of this year’s WTA finals in Singapore.
The draw placed top-seeded Williams in the Red Group with 23-year-old Simona Halep and 20-year-old Eugenie Bouchard as well as the more experienced Ana Ivanovic, who has beaten the American only once in eight matches.
The tournament starts Monday at the 10,000-capacity Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The White Group sees second-seeded Maria Sharapova, the French Open champion, joined by Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska.
