In brief: No. 1 Kentucky suffocates No. 4 Kansas
College basketball: Dakari Johnson scored 11 points, Andrew Harrison had 10 and No. 1 Kentucky used a dominant defense to blow out No. 4 Kansas 72-40 in Tuesday night’s Champions Classic at Indianapolis..
The Wildcats (3-0) shot just 43.1 percent from the field, but they were so good on defense that it didn’t matter. Kansas (1-1) shot just 19.6 percent from the field and was 15 for 27 at the line in the storied program’s worst offensive performance since a 61-45 loss to Kentucky on Dec. 1, 1998.
Wayne Selden Jr. had nine points for the Jayhawks, and Cliff Alexander finished with eight.
• Cook, Okafor power Duke: Quinn Cook scored 19 points and Jahlil Okafor had 17 to lead No. 4 Duke (3-0) past No. 19 Michigan State (1-1) 81-71 in the State Farm Champions Classic at Indianapolis.
Michigan State was led by Brendan Dawson with 18 points and Travis Trice with 15. But the Spartans (1-1) couldn’t get enough stops and struggled to contain Okafor, the nation’s top freshman who didn’t disappoint in one of the premier early-season showcases.
• Aztecs edge Utah: JJ O’Brien had a strong second half and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, helping No. 16 San Diego State (2-0) to 53-49 victory against No. 25 Utah (1-1) at San Diego.
O’Brien, who played for Utah as a freshman, had no points and three rebounds in the first half, and SDSU trailed 18-17 at the break.
The teams combined for 18 points in the final 46.8 seconds.
• Cavaliers roll: Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson scored 17 points each and No. 9 Virginia (3-0) closed the first half on a 22-6 run and beat South Carolina State (0-3) 75-55 at Charlottesville, Virginia.
• Shockers rock Memphis: Ron Baker scored 21 points to lead No. 11 Wichita State (2-0) to a 71-56 win over Memphis (0-1) at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, pushing the Shockers regular-season win streak to a nation-leading 33 games.
• Virginia Commonwealth makes late run: Virginia Commonwealth (2-0) pulled away in the final three minutes to register a hard-fought 87-78 victory over Toledo (1-1) at Richmond, Virginia.
Treveon Graham and junior Melvin Johnson each scored 22 points to lead the Rams, who finally took control of the game with nine unanswered points down the stretch.
• Ohio State drops Marquette: Kam Williams scored 15 points and Shannon Scott added a career-best 14 assists to lead No. 20 Ohio State (2-0) past Marquette (1-1) 74-63 at Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes shot 65 percent from the field – including 8 of 15 on 3-pointers.
Lakers win second behind Bryant’s 28.
NBA: Kobe Bryant scored 28 points and the Los Angeles Lakers won for only the second time this season, beating the host Atlanta Hawks 114-109.
Bryant’s biggest shot came with 1:11 remaining, when he backed in against Thabo Sefolosha and made a fadeaway jumper despite being fouled. Bryant slapped hands with a fan on the front row and completed the three-point play, giving the Lakers a 108-102 lead.
• Jazz belt Thunder: Alec Burks had 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, and Utah beat reeling Oklahoma City 98-81 at Salt Lake City.
Oklahoma City has lost three straight and seven of nine.
• Bucks continue resurgence: Ersan Ilyasova had 20 points, and rebuilding Milwaukee climbed above .500 for the first time in more than a year with a 117-113 win over visiting New York. .
Zaza Pachulia added season highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds for Milwaukee, which improved to 6-5 on the year.
Irish second team whips USA 4-1
Soccer: The United States’ winless streak stretched to four games with a year-ending 4-1 loss to a second-string Ireland team.
Ireland changed all 11 starters from Friday’s 1-0 loss at Scotland in European Championship qualifying and went ahead in the seventh minute when Anthony Pilkington chipped goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who made his second international start and first since January 2012.
Mix Diskerud scored to the United States Jozy Altidore’s cross was headed to him by Chris Wondolowski.
Fleury’s shutout ends Montreal win streak
NHL: Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves for his league-leading fourth shutout of the season as visiting Pittsburgh snapped Montreal’s six-game winning streak, beating the Canadiens 4-0.
Beau Bennett and Steve Downie had first-period goals for the Penguins, and Brandon Sutter and captain Sidney Crosby each scored in the second. Pittsburgh has now won 10 of its last 11.
• Flames win shootout: Sean Monahan scored the decisive goal in the shootout to lift host Calgary to a 4-3 win over Anaheim.
• Bruins blank Blues: Tuukka Rask made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season and Boston snapped a six-game home losing streak against St. Louis with a 2-0 win.
Patrice Bergeron and Torey Krug scored for the Bruins, outshot 33-17. Rask earned his 24th career shutout.
• Howard untouched at Columbus: Jimmy Howard made 28 saves for his 19th career shutout, and Tomas Tatar and Tomas Jurco each had a goal and an assist to lift visiting Detroit over Columbus 5-0.
USC ends suspension for former captain
College football: Southern California has reinstated defensive back Josh Shaw, who had been suspended since he lied to school officials about how he sprained his ankles in a preseason fall.
Shaw jumped from a balcony following an argument with his girlfriend in late August.
Sarkisian says he has welcomed Shaw back to the team, but hasn’t decided whether the senior and former team captain will play when the Trojans (7-3, 6-2 Pac-12) visit No. 11 UCLA on Saturday.
• Two Tennessee players under investigation: Tennessee linebacker A.J. Johnson and cornerback Michael Williams have been identified as subjects of a rape investigation, according to Knoxville police.
Police say no charges have been filed in the investigation of the incident at a Knoxville apartment. The university suspended Johnson and Williams on Monday from all team-related activities.
Gray leads No. 14 Cal to win over Nevada
Women’s basketball: Reshanda Gray scored 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting as No. 14 Cal (2-0) won its home opener, defeating Nevada (1-1) 76-54 at Berkeley, Calif.
Mikayla Cowling hit 3 of 4 3-pointers, scoring 13 points as the Bears shot nearly 50 percent from the field (30-61).
