Area roundup: Trio sparks EWU women’s basketball to win over Wichita State

The Eastern Washington Eagles (2-0) used a three-pronged attack – Jade Redmon, Hayley Hodgins, Lexie Nelson – to cruise to an 86-58 victory over the Wichita State Shockers (1-1) in nonconference women’s basketball action on Tuesday in Cheney.

Redmon finished with the first triple-double in the history of the Eagles women’s program – 10 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists. Hodgins poured in a game-high 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Nelson buried 10 of 17 shots and all six of her free throws to score 29. Teammate Melissa Williams chipped in with a game-high 16 rebounds to go with seven points.

The Eagles had a 47-35 advantage on the boards and led 43-18 at halftime.

Football

The Spokane Shock have been assigned three rookies for the 2015 season in receivers Keenan Davis and K.J. Stroud and defensive lineman Will Hunt.

Davis (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) played for the Iowa Hawkeyes in college before spending time with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent.

Stroud (6-3, 205) played at Bethune-Cookman in college then spent time with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts and the NFL’s New York Jets.

Hunt (6-5. 253) played for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in college.

Awards

Gonzaga Bulldogs senior midfielder Lars Ludwigs was named to the West Coast Conference men’s soccer first team, the conference announced.

GU senior forward Clark Phillips was named to the second team, while defender Ben White made the all-freshman team.

• Eastern Washington Eagles junior guard Tyler Harvey was tabbed the Big Sky Conference co-player of the week along with Portland State’s Tiegbe Bamba.

Harvey averaged 19.5 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in wins over Texas Southern and Utah Valley. He had just one turnover in 71 minutes of play.

Tennis

The Gonzaga Bulldogs women’s team received Letters of Intent from three players.

They are: Graciela Rosas – Mexicali, Mexico; Sophie Whittle – Nipomo, California; Nevada Apollo – Las Vegas.
