Spokane Arts Commission seeks new panel members

The Spokane Arts Commission is looking for six new commissioners to begin work in January.

Commissioners serve three-year terms, attend monthly meetings (on the fourth Tuesday), and have the opportunity to work on specific projects.

The Arts Commission was founded in 1976 with a mission to promote and enhance arts in Spokane. This year, the commission teamed up with the Spokane Arts Fund on projects such as the Cultivate Spokane Salon series, the Downtown Murals Project, and the recently completed Create Spokane arts month in October.

Applications – available online at https://static.spokanecity.org/ documents/bcc/committee- commissions-board-application- 2014-10-30.pdf – are due to the mayor’s office no later than Nov. 26.

Opera season set

Opera Coeur d’Alene has announced its 2015 season, with an eye toward expansion.

In September, the company will present a fully staged version of W.A. Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” at the Schuler Performing Arts Center at North Idaho College.

Among the cast will be Anne-Carolyn Bird as Pamina, Matthew Burns as Papageno, Vale Rideout as Tamino and Dawn Wolski as the Queen of the Night. The show will run Sept. 11 and 13.

The summer show will follow up this past season’s in-concert production of “The Pirates of Penzance” with another from the Gilbert and Sullivan catalog, “The Mikado.” Once again, two of the Coeur d’Alene Lake cruise boats will be lashed together for a one-performance only concert.

The cast will include Jadd Davis, artistic director at Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre; Montana-bred, New York singer Kurt Olds; Spokane favorite Wolski; and Aaron Nicholson, Opera CdA’s artistic director.

Nicholson said the company is considering launching a second fully staged opera, possibly in August, but plans haven’t been nailed down.
