Book Notes: Brooke Matson caps GU’s Visiting Writers Series

Poet Brooke Matson will read at Gonzaga University in this school year’s final installment of the Visiting Writers Series on Wednesday.

She will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Cataldo Globe Room on the GU campus.

Matson is a Gonzaga graduate who was born and raised in Yakima. Her first book of poetry, “The Moons,” was published in 2012. She lives in Spokane and teaches at M.E.A.D., an alternative high school in the Mead School District. She also helped found RiverSpeak, a Spokane-area arts forum.

Sharing the stage Wednesday will be the winners of the Michael and Gail Gurian Writing Awards.

This year’s winners are Victoria J. Smith, poetry; Megan A. Besch, fiction; and Haley A. Swanson and Amy F. Kryston, creative nonfiction.

The Gurians have sponsored the awards for five years. Michael Gurian is a Spokane counselor and New York Times best-selling author. His books include “The Wonder of Boys” and “The Wonder of Girls.” Gail Gurian is a Spokane therapist.
