Area roundup: Patrick McGrath’s blast helps Cougars top Toreros

Patrick McGrath belted a three-run home run and reliever Sean Hartnett (1-0) fired four shutout innings to lead the Washington State Cougars (7-9) to a 9-7 nonconference victory over the 17th-ranked San Diego Toreros (14-5) on Tuesday in San Diego.

Ben Roberts had two hits, including a double and drove in a pair of runs for WSU.

Junior hockey

The playoff-bound Spokane Chiefs announced the addition of 16-year-old defenseman Tyson Helgesen to their roster.

Helgesen (6-foot-2, 185 pounds), the Chiefs’ fifth-round selection in 2012, played in 55 games this season with the Whitecourt Wolverines of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

The Chiefs, seeded sixth in the Western Hockey League’s Western Conference, will open the best-of-seven postseason series Saturday and Sunday at third-seeded Victoria.

Golf

The North Idaho Cardinals men won the four-team Warrior Invitational at the Clarkston Golf and Counrty Club by one stroke over host Lewis-Clark State.

Tanner Martin paced NIC with a two-round total of 159, four strokes behind medalist Tanner Priest of LCSC.

The 12th-ranked Warriors women easily won their three-team tourney, beating runner-up Columbia Basin by 87 strokes. Heather Bruce of LCSC was the medalist at 161.

Basketball

Whitworth’s Dustin McConnell was named to the Division III first team All-West Region by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
