GSL girls: Lewis and Clark defeats CV 62-52
The Lewis and Clark Tigers girls basketball team forced 15 turnovers in the first half against Central Valley.
The Tigers didn’t get the pace to their liking, though, until the third quarter. When they did, they took control.
LC finished the third quarter on a 10-4 run and started the final period with a 10-2 surge as the visiting Tigers topped the Bears 62-52 Friday in a battle between teams tied for second in the Greater Spokane League.
CV watched most of a 20-11 lead dissolve under an avalanche of 11 turnovers early in the second quarter. Unfortunately for the Bears, the mistakes followed them into the second half.
The Bears (5-3, 4-2) finished with 28 to just six for LC (6-2, 5-1).
“You watch film and their strength – and it’s obviously a very good strength – is their inside players,” LC coach Jim Redmon said. “We felt we had to have the tempo and had to get after their guards. We did a better job of it in the second half. In the first half, they had a better tempo. They were comfortable and they got the ball inside. It’s tough to guard those two posts.”
To be sure. Junior CV post Madison Hovren finished with a career high 32 points on 10-of-15 shooting from short range, and she also had 10 rebounds. Senior post Mariah Cunningham scored all 10 of her points in the first half before foul trouble slowed her down the final two quarters.
LC determined it was going to control the tempo in the second half.
“We talked at halftime about coming out strong in the third,” Redmon said. “I thought we came out with a little more intensity than they did. That gained some confidence for us and things started to roll. We started to hit more shots.”
Leading the way were sophomore guard Riley Lupfer and junior guard Michaela Kay. Lupfer finished with 18 points and Kay added 17.
LC took the lead for good at 34-32 when sophomore forward Taylor Cunningham made two free throws with 4:18 to go in the third.
The Tigers’ 10-4 run at the end of the third gave them separation that CV couldn’t overcome.
Senior guard Lindsay Lee’s two free throws with 4:35 to go gave LC its biggest lead at 56-40.
Lupfer said LC’s intensity began to change just before halftime – thanks largely to a pair of steals by Lee.
“She got those steals and really got us going,” Lupfer said.
Lupfer said LC needs to cash in more often on opponents’ mistakes.
“We didn’t really capitalize on those turnovers,” Lupfer said. “If we’d capitalized it would have been a way different game. We’d get the turnover but we just wanted to rush everything.”
Gonzaga Prep 60, University 31: The league-leading Bullpups (7-1, 6-0) cruised past the visiting Titans (3-5, 3-3). Post Otiona Gildon led G-Prep with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Bullpups raced to a 32-9 halftime lead. Gildon got support from Laura Stockton and Hannah Caudill, who had 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Ferris 73, North Central 38: The hot-shooting Saxons (4-4, 3-3) were too much for the visiting Indians (0-8, 0-6). Kaley Lenhart hit 4 of 8 3-pointers to lead Ferris with 18 points and Jill Louthian had 15. Brittney Johnson had 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals. Lauren Hare led NC with 11 points and Brianna King added 10.
Shadle Park 54, Mt. Spokane 48: The Highlanders (3-5, 3-3) rallied from a first-half deficit to stop the visiting Wildcats (3-5, 2-4). Winter Hayes led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds and teammate Amanda Konyenbelt had seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Dallas Flager led Mt. Spokane with 15 points.
Mead 70, Rogers 35: The Panthers (5-3, 4-2) jumped out to a 40-13 halftime lead over the visiting Pirates (0-8, 0-6). Delany Junkermier led Mead with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Bailey Bordelon had 12 and five rebounds. Talia Felice led Rogers with 11 points.
