Area women’s basketball: BYU ends Bulldogs
Jennifer Hamson scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half and Lexi Eaton had 15 points and 10 rebounds as BYU ended Gonzaga’s 13-game winning streak with a 62-52 West Coast Conference win Saturday in Provo, Utah.
Morgan Bailey added 14 points for the Cougars (21-5, 11-4), who trailed 33-27 at the half but shot 43 percent in the second half while Gonzaga shot just 15.4 percent.
Jazmine Redmon had 15 points for the Bulldogs (23-4, 13-2), who could have clinched a 10th straight conference title.
Gonzaga had 23 offensive rebounds but couldn’t take advantage.
The 6-foot-7 Hamson had just five points and fouled out in 13 minutes when BYU lost 68-62 at Gonzaga but her 18 points in the second half of the rematch was one point shy of matching the Bulldogs. With Hamson 10 of 12, BYU was 16 of 19 from the free throw line in the second half.
Gonzaga has three remaining regular-season games, all at the McCarthey Athletic Center, starting with Portland next Saturday at 2 p.m.
Northern Arizona 86, Eastern Washington 78: Erikka Banks scored 31 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Lumberjacks (8-15, 5-9) defeated the Eagles (12-11, 8-6) in a Big Sky Conference game in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The loss snapped EWU’s four-game winning streak.
Northern Arizona made 30 of 36 free throws to hold the Eagles at bay.
Eastern Washington was led by Hayley Hodgins, who scored 22 points and made 10 of 11 free throws.
Idaho 69, Utah Valley 61: Christina Salvatore matched her season-high with 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds to guide the Vandals (18-8, 11-1) to a win over the Wolverines (4-20, 1-10) in a Western Athletic Conference game in Moscow, Idaho.
Stacey Barr added 17 points and five rebounds and Connie Ballestero chipped in 10 points and four assists for Idaho.
The Vandals play Grand Canyon in Phoenix on Thursday.
Whitworth 72, George Fox 68: The Pirates ended the game on a 5-0 run and beat the Bruins in a Northwest Conference game in Spokane.
George Fox’s Justine Benner made a layin with 1:26 left in the fourth, but the Bruins wouldn’t score again.
Kayla Johnson led Whitworth with 19 points and K.C. McConnell added 13 points and five rebounds. Benner scored a game-high 25 points for George Fox.
Columbia Basin 74, CC Spokane 63: Courtney Nelson had 20 points and seven rebounds and the Hawks (22-3, 12-0) extended their winning streak to 16 games with a win over the Sasquatch (13-12, 5-7) in an NWAACC game at Spokane Falls Community College.
Columbia Basin led by nine points at halftime and extended its lead to 19 after opening the second half on a 14-4 run.
CCS’ Riley Holsinger had 33 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five blocks. She’s two points shy of CCS’ all-time career scoring record.
North Idaho 62, Snow 59 (OT): Renae Mokrzycki had 21 points and 14 rebounds as the Cardinals (21-8, 7-7) overcame a slow start and beat the Badgers (11-15, 4-9) in overtime in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game in Coeur d’Alene.
