In brief: County to pay man attacked by K-9
SEATTLE – Pierce County will pay a Tacoma man $225,000 to settle a lawsuit he brought after being attacked by a Lakewood police dog in 2011.
Chad Boyles settled with Pierce County even though the injuries were inflicted by a Lakewood police dog. The dog and his handler had been called to help Pierce County officers on a manhunt.
Boyles was out for a walk when the dog attacked him. An injury to his arm required surgery. The same dog and his handler have been named in several lawsuits involving serious dog bites. The dog has retired from police duty.
Girl tries jumping from police vehicle
BILLINGS – A 16-year-old girl and a Stillwater County sheriff’s deputy were injured when the girl tried to jump out of a patrol car on Interstate 90 near Laurel, the Montana Highway Patrol said.
Officials say the girl was being returned to a youth detention facility in Billings after a sentencing Thursday for a drug violation.
Patrol Capt. Keith Edgell said the teen was in the back seat of the car, handcuffed with the cuffs secured to a leather belly restraint, but she was able to unbuckle her seat belt and get to the door handle.
The deputy turned around when he heard the door open, and he grabbed the leather restraint to try to prevent the girl from jumping out of the car. That caused the deputy to lose control of the vehicle, which hit the median divider. Both were treated for minor injuries.
