CdA’s Gilkey honored with national AD award
Todd Gilkey, assistant principal/activities director at Coeur d’Alene High School since 2007, has been named a National Federation of State High School Associations Citations recipient. Gilkey, in his 15th year as a high school athletic administrator, is one of eight nationally who will be honored Dec. 15 in National Harbor, Maryland, during the 45th annual National Athletic Directors Conference.
NFHS Citations are presented annually to athletic directors in recognition of contributions at the local, state and national levels.
Gilkey began in education as a teacher at St. Maries High School in 1992 and assumed the athletic director’s duties in 1999. He has headed up numerous Idaho High School Activities Association state tournaments in Coeur d’Alene in volleyball, soccer and softball and more than 30 regional tournaments. Since 2011, he has been a member of the IHSAA Executive Board.
He was the Idaho 3A Athletic Director of the Year in 2005 and the 5A A.D. of the Year in 2010 and 2013.
Gilkey has been Idaho’s voting delegate to the National Athletic Directors Conference since 2007 and continues to serve on national committees.
College scene
Brodrick Hirai, a Whitworth senior defensive tackle from Southridge of Kennewick, was a second-team selection on the 2014 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Division III football team. Hirai has a 3.88 grade-point average as a biology major and recently learned he has been accepted to medical school at the University of Washington.
• Cooper Kupp, the Eastern Washington sophomore wide receiver from Davis of Yakima, has been selected to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Division I football team in his first year of eligibility. He was named to the second team with a 3.47 GPA in economics.
• Adam Talley, a North Idaho College sophomore from East Valley, is the Northwest Athletic Conference Baden Athlete of the Year for men’s soccer. Talley, whose 20 goals led the league and broke the NIC mark of 18, was a major force in the Cardinals’ 17-2-2 season in which they led the NWAC in goals with 56.
• Jade Redmon, a sophomore women’s basketball player from Mead, and Ronnie Hamlin, a senior football player from Lacey, Washington, are the Eastern Washington athletics department December Scholar-Athletes of the Month.
Redmon, who has a 3.72 GPA as a chemistry major, played an integral role in helping EWU to its first winning record in November since the 2009-10 season. She became the first player in school history, male or female, to record a triple-double, with 10 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists in an 86-58 win over Wichita State.
Hamlin, who has a 3.56 GPA with a double major in construction management and mechanical engineering, had 19 tackles in November as he established a school career record for tackles, passing the 432 of J.C. Sherritt from 2007-10.
• Morgan Douglass, a Gonzaga sophomore from Mead, received honorable mention on the West Coast Conference All-Academic team for volleyball. She has a 3.70 GPA with an undeclared major.
Hockey
Brett Bartman and Steven Kuhn, two former Spokane Chiefs, were named Canadian Interuniversity Sport Academic All-Canadians for the 2013-14 school year for maintaining an academic average of 80 percent or higher while playing on their school’s varsity team.
Bartman, a Chief from 2007-10, was captain of last year’s University of Calgary men’s hockey team that made it to the Canada West Finals before losing to the University of Alberta Bears.
Kuhn, a Chief from 2008-12, played for St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, continuing his reputation as an iron man. He played in all 56 games for the X-Men in each of two straight seasons after playing in 72 games a year over four seasons for Spokane.
They are among several former Chiefs who are taking advantage of a WHL program that allows players to receive one year of post-secondary education expenses for each year they spent in the league.

Fourteen officials from area associations were selected to work Washington state high school championship finals in football, soccer and volleyball, the Washington Officials Association announced.

Volleyball – Juli Jones, Spokane Area VB Association, 3A/4A; Rich Waller, Lewiston, Inland Empire Association, and Lisa Paull, Sandpoint, SAVOA, both 2A; Denise Smith, Colville Valley; Rochell Holman, Clarkston, IEA; Mark Cullen, Mary Ann Ehrgott and Keith Ward, all Spokane and SAVOA, all 1B/2B/1A.
Volleyball
Lisa Paull, a longtime referee from Sandpoint, is the Spokane Area Volleyball Referees Association Referee of the Year, as voted by her peers. The 23-year veteran officiated the final match of the Washington 2A high school championships last month.
Other award winners: Juli Jones, Partner of the Year; Bob Francis, Contributor of the Year; Stephen Girdner, Most Improved and Best Second-Year Official; Davin Darrough, Rookie of the Year; and Mallory Gonwick and Chad Coupland, Best Third-Year Official.
