Obituary: Borneman, Harold John “Hal”

BORNEMAN, Harold John “Hal” (Age 88) Left this world on Thursday, April 17, 2014.

He was born on November 6, 1925 to Karl and Anna Borneman in Eureka, California as the third of three children.

Hal lived in Eureka until he joined the Navy after graduating from Eureka High School.

While in the Navy, he earned the nickname ‘Barney’ which he used throughout his life.

After being discharged from the Navy, he attended Gonzaga University where he earned his engineering degree.

Hal married Mary Ann Koleff in November 1948 and together they raised a family of six children.

Hal was employed as an engineer at Brown Trailers, Clark Equipment, and Fruehauf Trailers where he held technical and managerial positions of increasing responsibility.

In 1966 he became a partner in Atlas Systems of Spokane.

Hal and Mary Ann moved their family several times during Hal’s career and returned to Spokane in 1966 where he lived until his death.

In his final years, he was cared for at home by daughter, Susan, and grandson Nathan.

Everywhere Hal and Mary Ann lived they were active in their church and had an extensive network of friends.

Hal was a founding member of Shadle Park Presbyterian Church and again attended there after the family’s return to Spokane.

He served his church wherever and whenever needed - he sang in the choir, was a greeter, was an Elder, and served on multiple committees throughout the years.

In addition to his church, he was active in Meals on Wheels, was an avid duck hunter, and a woodworker.

He loved to garden, play sports, swim, play with his grandchildren, watch birds, and spend weekends on Lake Pend Oreille on his boat the ‘Mary Ann II’.

Hal was pre-deceased by Mary Ann in August 2011.

He is survived by their six children - Jim (Christina), Susan, Lucinda (Joe), John (Carol), Jane (Dan), and Ann; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and “adopted” grand- children.

He was a blessing to us all!
