Santa Clara tops Gonzaga in 10 innings
Santa Clara scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th and threw out Gonzaga’s potential tying run in the bottom of the inning Friday as the Broncos edged the Bulldogs 6-5 to open a three-game West Coast Conference baseball series at Patterson Complex.
Gonzaga (10-22, 6-7) rallied from a 5-1 deficit with two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and the tying run in the ninth on Cabe Reiten’s two-out RBI double to right.
Kyle Czaplak of Santa Clara (14-19, 5-5) reached on an infield error to open the 10th. Czaplak moved up on a sacrifice and groundout before scoring on a two-out wild pitch by David Bigelow.
GU’s Payden Lamb doubled down the left-field line with two outs in the 10th. After Jimmy Sinatro walked, Sam Brown singled to left and Lamb was thrown out at home by Kert Woods.
Lamb finished 4 for 6 with one run and Reiten was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and one run.
Reece Karalus pitched two innings to earn the win.
• Jared Fisher (3-3) allowed four hits over six shutout innings as ninth-ranked Washington (23-6-1, 11-2) continued to set the pace in the Pac-12 with a 6-1 win over Stanford (11-15, 3-7) to open a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
UW’s Braden Bishop and Robert Pehl had two-run singles in the second.
Softball
Sara Aasness (10-4) scattered seven hits over seven innings and Megan Winans highlighted a three-run third with a two-run double as Pacific (21-9, 16-8 Northwest Conference) solidified its hold on second place with a 4-3 win over Whitworth at Forest Grove, Ore.
The teams concluded a game that was postponed March 8 after three innings.
Taylor Gilbert went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI for the third-place Pirates (22-14, 14-10).
• Kayla Bonstrom’s three-run homer to center highlighted an eight-run fifth as Stanford (25-15, 2-9 Pac-12) posted a six-inning 13-5 win over Washington (23-11, 3-7) at Stanford, Calif.
• North Idaho (26-17, 21-13) swept a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader, 8-6 and 9-3, over Snow (17-21, 14-20) at Ephraim, Utah. The Cardinals are on a five-game winning streak.
Soccer
The Spokane Shadow will feature five players from Gonzaga University this season: Dustin Ferger (East Valley), Graison Le (Coeur d’Alene), Keane Ellis, Aaron Jeffery and Andrew Newman.
The Shadow’s debut season in the Evergreen Premier League will begin May 3 against Bellingham at Spokane Falls Community College.
