Obituary: Scarpelli, Esther J. (Mantese)

SCARPELLI, Esther J.

(Mantese) Esther Joanne Mantese was born to Santo and Mary (Tavone) Mantese on December 21, 1923 in Colbert, WA.

She was raised on a small farm on Dartford Road along with seven other brothers and sisters.

She graduated from Mead High School and soon moved to Spokane, eventually working for the Telephone Company as a switchboard operator during World War II.

When she was 19 years old she met the love of her life, Sam Scarpelli.

They married in 1945 and together they raised three children: Constance, Joanne and Samuel.

She was loving, kind, and industrious.

She was a faithful wife and an understanding mother.

She was devoted to her Catholic faith and passed it on to her children.

In the 1960’s she returned to work at Montgomery Ward as a telephone operator, eventually retiring in 1983.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sam, and three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her three children and one brother and one sister and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and caregivers at Rockwood South Retirement Community and Sacred Heart Medical Center.

There will be a visitation held on Thursday, April 10, from 4-8pm with The Rosary held at 7:00pm at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, in the Rose Chapel, 2203 N. Division Spokane, WA 99207.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:00am at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Spokane, WA 99202.

Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
