Chiefs fall to T-birds, go winless in tourney

The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Spokane Chiefs 6-4 in preseason hockey on Sunday.

The Chiefs were winless in the weekend tournament in Everett, losing two games in regulation and another in a shootout.

Liam Stewart, Carter Proft, Markson Bechtold and Tyson Predinchuk scored for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs next play two preseason games in the Tri-Cities, taking on Kootenay on Friday and Tri-City on Saturday. The Chiefs play their lone preseason home game against Tri-City on Sept. 11 at EWU.

Women’s soccer

Washington State (3-0) won its third straight match, blanking visiting Eastern Washington 1-0.

Micaela Castain had the lone goal, which came in the 19th minute off a corner kick from Castain that caromed off an EWU (0-4) defender and inside the near post.

• Madison Mercado’s goal at 69:56 lifted host Oklahoma State (3-0-1) to a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga in Stillwater.

Emily Eckmann had tied the game less than two minutes earlier for the Bulldogs (1-2).

• Jaimee Hulst, off an assist from Morgan Kuehl, drove in the only goal in the 34th minute to give North Idaho College a 1-0 victory over visiting Northwest College of Powell, Wyo.

Volleyball

Tournament MVP Kyra Holt and Jaicee Harris had double-doubles to lead Washington State to a 25-19, 16-25, 25-18, 25-12 victory over Army to win the Black Knights Invitational at West Point, N.Y. The Cougars won the tournament with victories in their first matches of the season over Army, Alabama, and Seton Hall. Holt had 21 hills and 14 digs and Harris 10 kills and 17 digs.
