In brief: Briefs: Halloween Party, wiener roast set

ROCKFORD – The annual children’s Halloween party will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the McIntosh Grange, 319 S. First St.

Kids are encouraged to wear a costume and enjoy games, treats and other activities.

The Rockford Lions Club will host its annual wiener roast in the city park about a block away at the same time.

Both events are free.

Lodging, planning panel seats open

SPOKANE VALLEY – Volunteers are needed to fill spots on the Spokane Valley Planning Commission and the Spokane Valley Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.

Two spots are open on the Spokane Valley Planning Commission. The terms of the commissioners filling those seats, Bill Bates and Joe Stoy, are expiring at the end of 2013.

Commissioners review development. A background in land-use, planning, building design and transportation is recommended.

Two spots are also open on the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, which allocates lodging tax funds every year to organizations or events that promote tourism. The terms expiring at the end of 2013 must be filled by a person representing a business required to collect the tax and a person representing an organization eligible to receive funding from the tax.

Applicants for the unpaid positions on both panels must live within the city limits. Appointments are made by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Applications are available online at www.spokanevalley.org and at City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave.

The application deadline is Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. for the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and 5 p.m. for the planning commission. Call (509) 720-5102 for more information.

City Council plans to discuss budget

LIBERTY LAKE – A special City Council meeting has been set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.

Appleway Florist marking 61st year

SPOKANE VALLEY – Appleway Florist and Greenhouse will celebrate its 61st anniversary with an open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at 11006 E. Sprague Ave.

There will be anniversary specials, door prizes, a raffle, coffee tasting, desserts and hot wassail.

The family-owned business was founded in 1952 by Bob and Virginia Lewis.
