Education Notebook: Cataldo School to sell Halloween costumes

Cataldo Catholic School will host its annual Halloween costume sale Oct. 17 and 18. The event will be in the school’s parking lot at 455 W. 18th Ave., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Trick-or-treaters of all ages can shop for new and gently used costumes for not-so-scary prices.

Costume donations prior to the sale will be accepted. For information, call (509) 624-8759.

Cheney, Spokane schools to collect coats for kids

The fall weather has arrived and colder temperatures are on the way.

Through Friday, all schools in the Cheney School District and Spokane Public Schools will collect coats to help local children in need stay warm.

New and gently used coats may be delivered to collection boxes at any of the two districts’ schools.

Coats 4 Kids has helped area children stay warm during Spokane’s winter months since 1985 and has collected and distributed nearly 290,000 coats.

Coats 4 Kids will distribute coats Oct. 21 through Nov. 1, or until the coats are gone. For more collection sites, distribution sites and information visit www.kxly.com.

Spokane school designs earn honors from city

Spokane Public Schools were recently honored by the city of Spokane for exceptional design practices.

Westview Elementary School was awarded the 2013 Mayor’s Urban Design award. ALSC Architects of Spokane were the architects for the project.

The award is given every other year for recently completed projects by a community committee selected by the mayor. The school district has been honored each year the awards have been given.

Past honors include the Mayor’s Choice Award, awarded to Rogers High School and NAC Architecture in 2009 and Ridgeview Elementary School and ALSC Architects in 2007. Merit Awards were given to Shadle Park High School and NAC Architecture in 2011 and Lincoln Heights Elementary School and Integrus Architecture in 2007.
