Sasquatch split NWAACC openers

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (10-8, 1-1) and the Columbia Basin Hawks (9-9, 1-1) split a doubleheader in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges baseball openers on Wednesday in Pasco.

In the first game, Colton Loomis (2-2) allowed one earned run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings and Ricky Gonzalez had two hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Sasquatch to a 5-2 victory. Levi Johnson blanked the Hawks on two hits over the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the save.

In the second game, Ryan Atkinson went 4 for 6 – all singles – and drove in three runs to power the Hawks to a 16-6 eight-inning victory. Austin Bartleson doubled and had three RBIs for CC Spokane.

Softball

The Whitworth Pirates (18-12) split a pair of games at the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., losing the opener 8-7 in eight innings to Wisconsin-River Falls before bouncing back to defeat Buena Vista 7-4.

Jamie Brunner and Julia Johnson each had two RBIs to pace Whitworth in the first game.

In the second game, Riley Fritz ran her record to 11-2 for the Pirates and helped herself out by driving in a pair of runs.

Men’s soccer

Paul Meehan has been hired as a Gonzaga Bulldogs assistant coach.

Meehan, a Seattle native, was the head coach at Corban University in Salem, Ore., the past three years.
