Gonzales is Olerud Award winner

Former Gonzaga University baseball player Marco Gonzales won the 2013 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

He received the award, given by the College Baseball Foundation, Saturday night at a ceremony in Lubbock, Texas.

As a left-handed pitcher, the native of Fort Collins, Colo., went 7-3 in his final collegiate season with a 2.80 ERA, striking out 96 batters and walking 25 in 106 innings.

Gonzales also played first base and hit .311 with two home runs and 26 RBIs.

He was taken in the first round of this year’s major league draft and signed by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The award is named for former Washington State and major leaguer John Olerud.

College football: Three Eastern Washington University players are recent additions to watch lists for the College Football Performance Awards presented annually in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. The players – junior punter Jake Miller (Central Valley), senior linebacker Ronnie Hamlin, senior defensive back T.J. Lee – join EWU sophomore quarterback Vernon Adams on the lists.
