Obituary: Hargreaves, Henry G., S.J.

Age 98

HARGREAVES, Henry G., S.J.

Passed away the morning of February 22, 2013 at the Jesuit Infirmary, Spokane, WA.

He was 98 years old.

The eldest of two sons, Henry George Hargreaves was born on May 28, 1914, to George and Marcelline (Carrere) Hargreaves in Seattle, WA.

He graduated from Seattle Preparatory School in 1932, and attended Gonzaga University for three years.

Henry entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Sheridan, OR, on September 25, 1935, and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1947.

Henry spent 50 plus years working in Alaska in a variety of works and places.

Much of his time was engaged in pastoral work with the Native Peoples of Western Alaska although he also spent time in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Always a physically active person, Henry was in demand as a softball player into his early 80s.

Some of his interests were singing, playing the violin, chess and various card games.

Henry was known for his gift of taking popular songs and changing the lyrics to honor people on their birthday.

Due to declining health Henry moved to Spokane in 2003 to live and pray with his brother Jesuits at the Oregon Province assisted-living center.

Henry was preceded in death by his brother Philip in 2004.

He is survived by his brother Jesuits of the Oregon Province as well as the countless friends and colleagues he made throughout his life.

A Vigil Service will be held at 7pm, Friday, March 1 at the Jesuit House Chapel, Gonzaga University.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am, Saturday, March 2, likewise at the Jesuit House Chapel.

Inurnment will follow at the Oregon Province Cemetery, Mt.

St. Michael’s, Spokane, WA.
