South Hill man killed in attack owned several businesses

The man killed by a gunman in what authorities have described as a potentially targeted attack owned several businesses and had moved to Spokane just a few years ago with his family. Douglas J. Carlile, 63, died of multiple gunshot wounds, the Spokane County Medical Examiner confirmed this morning. He was shot in his home at 2505 S. Garfield shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday and Spokane police are still searching for the killer. Police aren’t commenting on potential motives, nor are they providing much information about the killer. However, detectives are actively trying to piece together Carlile’s business associations and asking that anyone with information about the victim’s business activities contact them at (509) 456-2233. Investigators have provided surveillance video of a white Dodge van that they believe might be connected to the attack. Police said the victim’s wife called for help Sunday evening to report that her husband had been confronted by a gunman in their home and that her husband was trying to calm him down. The woman reportedly ran upstairs to hide and call for help. “We don’t have these types of incidents in Spokane, where someone comes into somebody else’s house and just shoots them,” Spokane police Capt. Joe Walker said of the Sunday night attack. Early information suggests “the victim was targeted,” Walker said. Carlile is listed in state records as an officer in several companies. Among them is Bridgewater Energy LLC, which appears to be primarily a trucking company. He’s also listed as president of Oasis Development Inc., president of All Wood Recyclers Inc. of Issaquah, manager of Dovehaven LLC and principal in Rucon Inc.
