GU’s Walsh tied for 37th at U.S. Amateur

Gonzaga’s Sean Walsh shot a 1-over 71 Monday on the first day of the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship in Brookline, Mass.

Walsh, the first Bulldog to earn a spot in the event, is tied for 37th going into the final 18 holes of stroke play today at the Charles River Country Club.

The field of 312 golfers will be cut to the low 64 scorers after today’s round. Six rounds of match play begin Wednesday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole match Sunday.

• James Fahy of Gonzaga tied for 47th place at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, held at the Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, B.C.

Fahy, a junior this fall, fired a 10-over 292 at the event, which concluded Friday.

Soccer

The Idaho women’s soccer team was chosen to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference in the preseason poll.

Three Vandals – Katie Baran (Lakeside, Wash.), Chelsie Breen (Cheney) and Nitalia Zuniga – were selected to the preseason all-WAC team.

Idaho earned 23 points in the preseason poll, good for a second-place tie with Utah Valley. Seattle U was the favorite with 36 points.

The Vandals, who finished 6-14-1 overall last season and 3-4-1 in the conference, open their season Friday with an exhibition against Oklahoma in Moscow. The regular season opens Aug. 23 at Weber State.

Volleyball

Five Pac-12 women’s volleyball teams were ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason coaches poll.

Three of the top five teams are from the conference, with Stanford in third place, followed by USC and Washington. Oregon was ranked eighth and UCLA 12th.

Basketball

Lia Galdeira scored 16 points as Washington State beat Levice 69-34 in Levice, Slovakia, on Sunday.

The game was the first of four for the Cougars on a tour through Austria, Slovakia and Czech Republic.
