Jeter to DL once again

The New York Yankees put shortstop Derek Jeter back on the disabled list Monday in the latest setback in an injury-filled season for the captain.
Jeter is out with a strained right calf. The return to the DL came on the same day teammate Alex Rodriguez was suspended through the 2014 season in a drug case.
With Jeter going on the DL, the Yankees recalled infielder Dave Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa. They also designated infielder Brent Lillibridge for assignment, and Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list. Outfielder Thomas Neal was claimed off waivers by the Cubs.
Rodriguez is appealing the penalty by Major League Baseball and is eligible to play while the case is being resolved.
The 39-year-old Jeter did not play Saturday or Sunday at San Diego. He appeared to take an awkward step while making a play in Friday night’s 7-2 loss. He also had an awkward slide into third base.
A 13-time All-Star, Jeter is hitting .211 (4 for 19) with one home run and two RBIs.
He broke his left ankle in the A.L. championship series in October, and he went down again right after he made his much anticipated return.
After missing the first 91 games, he served as the designated hitter against Minnesota on July 11. Then, in his third at-bat, he strained his right quadriceps and wound up going back on the disabled list.
Jeter returned to the lineup last week and played shortstop for the first time this season. He homered on the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore.
Ramirez out of lineup
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he thinks shortstop Hanley Ramirez will be out at least a few days with a right shoulder injury.
Mattingly said the N.L. West-leading Dodgers would be fine if Ramirez had to go on the 15-day disabled list.
Ramirez hurt his shoulder after tumbling into the stands catching a fly ball in the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 1-0 victory on Sunday.
The Dodgers did get rookie Yasiel Puig back in the lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals after missing a day with a right thumb injury.
Clearing the bases
The Los Angeles Angels have signed veteran left-hander Dontrelle Willis out of the independent Atlantic League. The 31-year-old Willis had a league-leading 2.56 ERA in 14 starts with the Long Island Ducks. … Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick was helped off the field after hyperextending his left knee while chasing a popup in the outfield. Kendrick was hurt in the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers when he sprinted into right field to catch Elvis Andrus’ tailing popup and collided with right fielder Colin Cowgill.
