Man charged in Okanogan stabbing and shooting death

A man is being charged with first-degree murder in Okanogan County after a shooting and stabbing over a stolen clutch. Sheriff Frank Rogers said Don A. Moore, 65, claimed he acted in self defense when he killed Bruce R. Molony, 55, of Riverside, Saturday afternoon. Rogers said Moore went to Molony’s residence at 12 Foggy River Loop Road just north of Riverside around 4:15 p.m. with a gun to confront Molony over stolen property. “He pulled out the pistol and said, ‘you’re coming with me,’” the sheriff said of Moore. He said Moore claimed Molony then attacked him with a knife. Moore did have a cut to his abdomen, Rogers said, but police found Molony with several gunshot and stab wounds, all to his back. “When we got to the scene nothing added up,” Rogers said. Moore was treated for his injured stomach and then arrested and charged with first-degree murder. A week earlier, Rogers said, Moore reported he had let Molony stay in his house while he was out of town, and when he came back, found several items missing from the home. Rogers said his deputies were investigating the case but Moore decided to take matters into his own hands. When Moore discovered a clutch to his truck was missing, he went to confront Molony himself, the sheriff said. The gun used in the shooting was a .22 caliber pistol, according to a news release. Moore stabbed Molony several times with Molony’s knife after he ran out of bullets, the release said. Molony died at the scene. Moore attempted to drive away from the scene but ran off the edge of the driveway and the vehicle slid down an embankment, the release said. He called dispatch to report the incident and was still on scene when sheriff’s deputies arrived.
