Obituary: Clarke, Joyce (Anderson)
Age 80
CLARKE, Joyce (Anderson)
11/24/31-9/22/12
Joyce was born in San Francisco to Martha and Oscar Anderson on November 24, 1931.
The family, including brother Gerald and sister Nancy, moved to Seattle in 1941.
Joyce attended John Muir Elementary, Franklin High, and the University of Washington, where in her senior year she was president of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and of the UW Panhellenic Society.
In 1954 she married George (Whit) Clarke and in 1962 the two of them moved their family of four children to Spokane.
Joyce is remembered as a charismatic personality and a talented painter.
She was a founder of a downtown art gallery for St. Stephen’s Church and was involved in community projects ranging from Girl Scouts, Garden Club, art shows and politics.
She was an integral part of the old “Stone Street Gang” where neighbors golfed, vacationed, played bridge and planned social events together.
Her children remember her as someone with diverse and wide ranging interests who loved fixing gourmet dinners, working needle craft, and who had special love for travel and camping.
She also made sure her children were exposed to the arts and literature and diverse perspectives.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Nancy Callaghan (Medina), her children Stephen Clarke (Spokane), Leanne Clarke (Seattle), Leslie Campbell (Cheney), David Clarke (Puyallup)— her grandchildren: Nick, Nile, Blair, Stephanie, Addie, Jenna, Jamison, Annicca, Ashley— and 18 great-grandchildren.
A memorial for friends and family will be held in her home on October 20th, 2pm.
