Pettitte will face M’s

After pitching in the minors this spring, Andy Pettitte is scheduled to start against Mariners on Sunday. (Associated Press)

Andy Pettitte is set to rejoin the New York Yankees and start this Sunday at home against the Seattle Mariners.

“Everybody’s in agreement he’s not going to benefit from any more time below,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday.

Pettitte retired after the 2010 season and sat out last year. The lefty, who turns 40 next month, returned to the team in spring training and has been pitching in the minors where he has a 3.71 ERA in 17 innings over four appearances. He has 240-138 career record in the majors.

MLB, colleges talk

Major League Baseball would fund scholarships and exert greater influence over Division I college baseball under what would be an unprecedented partnership with the NCAA.

If an agreement is reached, it could lead other professional organizations to enter partnerships with the NCAA.

The NCAA’s point man in the talks, University of Hartford president Walter Harrison, said it could take a year or longer for an agreement to be reached because new or amended legislation might be required.

Harrison said he could see similar arrangements occurring in other sports that generally produce no revenue for colleges. The PGA, for example, might one day help fund scholarships in golf, he said.

According to Harrison, five issues have been discussed with MLB: scholarships, ways to increase diversity, the calendar for the entry draft and College World Series, MLB’s involvement in summer leagues, and wooden bats.

Clearing the bases

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo has been penalized by Major League Baseball following his remarks about Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels. MLB said Rizzo was disciplined, without providing specifics. Rizzo was upset that Hamels hit Nationals rookie Bryce Harper with a pitch on Sunday and then said he deliberately tried to plunk him. Rizzo said Hamels’ act was “classless” and “gutless.” … The Nationals placed outfielder Jayson Werth on the 15-day disabled list after Werth underwent surgery to repair his broken left wrist. Werth is expected to be out at least 12 weeks, a huge blow to a team currently atop the N.L. East Division. … The Milwaukee Brewers have extended the contracts of general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke, a move to keep two of the most critical pieces of the team’s leadership in place through 2015.
