Hollins leads Minnesota past Indiana

Men’s basketball: Austin Hollins scored a career-high 18 points to help Minnesota beat seventh-ranked Indiana 77-74 on Thursday night in Bloomington, Ind.

Rodney Williams scored 14 points and Julian Welch added 10 for the Golden Gophers (13-5, 1-4 Big Ten), who had lost four straight.

Indiana freshman Cody Zeller matched a season high with 23 points for the Hoosiers (15-2, 3-2), who were 11-0 at home coming into the game.

• Murray State now 17-0: Donte Poole had 21 points and three steals to lead No. 15 Murray State (17-0, 5-0 Ohio Valley Conference) to a 66-55 win over Jacksonville State (6-13, 1-5) in Murray, Ky., giving the Racers the best start in school history.

Miami hands Maryland first loss

Women’s basketball: Riquna Williams scored 34 points and No. 13-ranked Miami defeated a top-five team for the first time by beating No. 5 Maryland 75-63 in Coral Gables, Fla.

Williams tied a career high with eight 3-pointers for the Hurricanes (14-3, 3-1 ACC). The Terrapins (16-1, 3-1) were held 21 points below their average.

• Kentucky edges Tennessee: A’dia Mathies drove the lane and scored in traffic with 4.2 seconds left to finish with a career-high 34 points and No. 9 Kentucky (15-2, 4-0) beat No. 6 Tennessee 61-60 in Lexington, Ky.

The Lady Volunteers (12-4, 3-1) saw their 36-game SEC winning streak come to an end.

• Wisconsin-Green Bay still unbeaten: Julie Wojta had 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds as No. 14 Wisconsin- Green Bay (14-0, 4-0 Horizon League) tied a school record with its 34th straight regular- season victory, 68-50 over Wright State (11-6, 4-1) in Fairborn, Ohio.

Canucks top Blues on Sedin’s overtime goal

NHL: Daniel Sedin scored a power-play goal 46 seconds into overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the host St. Louis Blues in a matchup for first place in the Western Conference.

• Predators rally with Legwand: David Legwand scored his second goal of the game at 4:26 of overtime, and the Nashville Predators rallied from a two-goal first-period deficit to beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in Nashville, Tenn.

• Red Wings win shootout: Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 for their 13th straight home win – one win away from the franchise record.

Anthony injured during Knicks’ loss

NBA: Rudy Gay scored a season-high 26 points and the Memphis Grizzlies beat New York 94-83 in Memphis, Tenn., to end the Knicks’ winning streak at four games.

The Knicks played most of the second half without scoring leader Carmelo Anthony after he sprained his right ankle early in the third period.

• Hawks win without Horford: Josh Smith poured in 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Joe Johnson scored 23 and the Atlanta Hawks won their first game without All-Star center Al Horford, routing the Charlotte Bobcats 111-81 in Atlanta.

The Hawks learned earlier in the day that Horford will miss at least three months after tearing the pectoral muscle in his left shoulder.

• Warriors lose Brown: Golden State Warriors center Kwame Brown is expected to miss at least three months because of a chest injury.

Owners extend Selig’s contract

Baseball: Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has been given a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season.

If he stays until September 2016, he would surpass Kenesaw Mountain Landis (1920-44) as the longest-serving baseball commissioner.

• Sale of Padres delayed: Major league owners have put off approval of sale of the San Diego Padres to Jeff Moorad.

Commissioner Bud Selig said that baseball’s ownership committee and executive council unanimously decided to defer action “to get more clarity and technical information.”

• Rays sign Scott: Free agent Luke Scott agreed to a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

LSU players declare for NFL draft

Football: LSU All- America cornerback Morris Claiborne and defensive tackle Michael Brockers have decided to leave school early to enter the NFL draft.

• Steele leaves Clemson: Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele won’t return to the Atlantic Coast Conference champions next season.

Steele said that he has left the Tigers after three seasons for other opportunities.

• Huskies hire Heyward: Washington has hired Keith Heyward away from Pac-12 foe Oregon State to be the Huskies’ defensive backs coach.

He replaces Jeff Mills and Demetrice Martin, who previously split duties coaching the Huskies defensive backs. Martin left to join Jim Mora’s new staff at UCLA, while Mills was fired along with defensive coordinator Nick Holt and linebackers coach Mike Cox following the Alamo Bowl.

• Yale turns to Harvard man: Yale went to Harvard to find its new football coach.

Tony Reno, who served as an assistant for the Crimson for the past three seasons, was introduced as the Bulldogs new coach, ending a turbulent process that began with the resignation of Tom Williams over résumé embellishments.

• Gator quits team: Florida running back Jeff Demps is giving up his football career to focus on track and the 2012 Olympics.

Demps wants to vie for a spot on the U.S. track and field team as a sprinter.

Thorpe fails to qualify at swim meet

Miscellany: Five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe continues to struggle nearly a year into his swimming comeback, failing to qualify for the 100-meter freestyle at the Victoria state titles after finishing seventh in his qualifying heat in Melbourne, Australia.

• DeLaet grabs early lead: Graham DeLaet of Canada opened with a 7-under 63 in the Sony Open in Honolulu to take the lead among the early starters at Waialae.

He has a two-shot lead over K.J. Choi, Carl Pettersson and Kyle Reifers.

• Kvitova’s bid halted: Defending champion Li Na reached the Sydney International final with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Petra Kvitova in Sydney, ending the Czech’s bid to become No. 1 before the Australian Open.

Li will play today against No. 3-ranked Victoria Azarenka, who beat Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
