Bulldogs rally in ninth inning, beat Nebraska

The Gonzaga baseball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning and came from behind to beat Nebraska 10-8 in a nonconference game Saturday in Peoria, Ariz.

Maxx Garrett hit a two-run triple in the ninth to start the Bulldogs’ rally. Garrett finished with three RBIs.

Marco Gonzales also had three hits and three RBIs for Gonzaga.

Kurt Farmer had a solo home run for Nebraska.

Tyler Olson started for the Bulldogs. He went six innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.

Gonzaga improved to 2-0 and Nebraska fell to 0-2.

The teams will wrap up the season-opening series today in Peoria, Ariz.

Track and field

Washington State junior Michael Bolligar won two events to lead local athletes at Vandal Collegiate indoor meet in Moscow, Idaho.

Bolligar claimed the title in the high jump with a season-best heighth of 6 feet, 8.75 inches. He also won the long jump with a distance of 22-6.5.

Dana Wells, Lee George, Aric Walden and Joe Bartlett also won events for the WSU men. Wells was first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.90 seconds.

George won the title in the mile (4:11.40), Walden was first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.19) and Bartlett won the shot put with a toss of 57-7.

Shawna Fermin (200, 24.35), Shaquana Logan (60-meter hurdles, 8.52) and Kayla Warren (long jump, 38-9.75) won events for the Cougar women.

Eastern Washington’s Keisa Monterola was the pole vault champion, reaching a height of 13-11.25.

Whitworth’s Luke Mathews won the heptathlon with a score of 4,467.

Gonzaga’s Emily Thomas and Robert Walgren won the women’s and men’s 3,000-meter run. Thomas finished in 9:57.00 and Walgren finished in 8:31.78.

Softball

North Idaho (10-15, 8-8) split a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader with Snow (7-5, 5-3) in Moses Lake.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won the opener 4-3. Amber Meyers hit a two-run home run and Ashley Moon added a solo shot in the sixth to put NIC ahead 4-2.

The Badgers won the second game 6-1.

Football

The Spokane Shock signed defensive lineman Marcus Adams and offensive linemen Chet Teofilo and Andrew Nierman.

Adams spent the previous eight years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Teofilo has NFL experience with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets. He appeared in three preseason games as a member of the Cowboys in 2010.

Nierman spent last year as a member of the Arena Football League’s New Orleans Voodoo.

Junior hockey

Five different players scored goals for the Castlegar Rebels in their 5-2 win over the Spokane Braves in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane.

Guisseppe Dippolito scored in the second period and Thomas McNevin added a third-period goal for the Braves.
