Signed The Philadelphia Flyers have signed All-Star forward Scott Hartnell to a multiyear contract extension. Hartnell is coming off his best season, scoring a career-high 37 goals. He was second on the Flyers with 67 points. The deal is reportedly worth $28.5 million over six years.

Starting Arizona State’s starting quarterback to open the season will be Taylor Kelly. First-year coach Todd Graham says the redshirt sophomore from Eagle, Idaho, has emerged from the competition with redshirt freshman Michael Eubank and sophomore Mike Bercovici.

Extension General manager David Poile announced an $8.4 million, two-year contract extension with center Mike Fisher at a fan event. Fisher was already under contract for the upcoming season with a $3 million salary and a salary-cap hit of $4.2 million. Nashville acquired Fisher in a trade with Ottawa in February 2011, and he had 24 goals in his first full season with the Predators.

Died Former Yale swimming and diving coach Philip E. Moriarty, who coached U.S. divers at the 1960 Olympics, has died. He was 98. Moriarty died Aug. 18 in Mystic, Conn., of natural causes. Moriarty coached at Yale for 44 years and was head coach of the swimming and diving teams from 1959-76. While at Yale, he coached numerous Olympians, including gold medalists Don Schollander, Steve Clark, Mike Austin and John Nelson.
