Jaguars defeat New Orleans with late touchdown pass
Jordan Palmer hit Kevin Elliott with an 11-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 13 seconds left, lifting the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars to a 27-24 preseason victory over the New Orleans Saints on Friday night.
Jacksonville saw continued progress from second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who outperformed Drew Brees of the Saints during the first half.
Lions 27, Ravens 12: Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes, Calvin Johnson had five catches for 111 yards and a score, and visiting Detroit beat Baltimore.
Operating under first-year coordinator Dean Pees, Baltimore’s defense gave up 254 yards in the first half. The Ravens also had two kick returns for touchdowns called back because of penalties.
Panthers 23, Dolphins 17: Cam Newton outplayed rookie Ryan Tannehill as Carolina defeated Miami in Charlotte, N.C.
Newton completed 8 of 11 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers scored on their first three possessions to take a 17-0 lead.
Tannehill played the entire first half and led six possessions – four of which ended in three-and-out.
Titans 30, Buccaneers 7: Chris Johnson ran for two touchdowns and Rob Bironas kicked three field goals as Tennessee beat Tampa Bay in Tampa, Fla.
Titans second-year quarterback Jake Locker didn’t have an ideal outing in his first NFL start, completing 4 of 11 for 21 yards and an interception.
Vikings 36, Bills 14: Christian Ponder threw a first-quarter touchdown pass in a sharp three-possession appearance, and Minnesota breezed past Buffalo at Minneapolis.
Vikings rookie linebacker Audie Cole returned interceptions for touchdowns on consecutive snaps late in the fourth quarter.
Cardinals 31, Raiders 27: John Skelton’s 3-yard toss to a wide-open Anthony Sherman was part of a 17-point second quarter by Arizona and the Cardinals beat Oakland in Glendale, Ariz.
