Obituary: San Nicolas, Jose Sablan

Age 83

SAN NICOLAS, Jose Sablan

Entered into eternal rest on August 14, 2012 in Spokane.

Jose Sablan San Nicolas , familian “Calando”, was born March 12, 1929 in Agat, Guam to Jose Blanco San Nicolas and Maria Sablan San Nicolas.

He grew up in Guam and graduated in 1949 from George Washington High School.

After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

After his term of service he went to Stillwater Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma State University.

He graduated with a Bachelors Degree majoring in Accounting.

While at OSU he met his wife Adelina V. Torrijos, also attending OSU, from Abra Philippines.

They married on December 24, 1955 in San Diego California.

They worked and raised their family on Guam.

He worked as an Accountant for the Government of Guam and retired in 1991, as controller of the Superior Courts of Guam.

While living on Guam he was an active member of Nuestra Senora de Las Aguas Catholic Church in Mongmong.

He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus and also enjoyed singing in the church choir.

He belonged to the “men’s group” at church and enjoyed being the bingo caller.

Member of the Young Men’s League of Guam, Toastmasters Club, and the American Legion of Guam.

He enjoyed playing many sports, bowling, fishing, but never caught the “big one”.

He also enjoyed golfing and tennis.

After retirement they joined their children in Spokane, Washington.

They became active members of St. Anthony’s, joining the choir, and Bible study group.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother David, sister Magdalena, and great-granddaughter Angelina DeCaro.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Adelina and four children Anne Marie (Frank) DeCaro, Adele Fe (Harold) Sykes, Azelle (Mark) DeForrest, Joel (Jennifer) San Nicolas, Also survived by his grandchildren, Dominic (Denise) DeCaro, Nicholas DeCaro (the late Jessica Alvarado), Nicholas Roberg, Jessica Roberg, and Joelle Marie San Nicolas.

Great-grandchildren, Brandon, Olivia, Angelo, Lucia, and Mia DeCaro.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, August 17th from 12:00-4:00 at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, 2203 N Division St. A Vigil will also be held at Hennessey-Smith on Friday, August 17th at 7:00 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, August 18th, 2012 at 9:00 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 2320 N Cedar St., with the Interment to follow at 10:30 am at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum, 7200 N Wall, Spokane.
